Here at PrepDig, we are committed to covering and promoting as many prospects as possible, from the most popular names to the hidden gems that typically abound at the Lone Star State and during the high school season we’re also doing it by featuring the teams they play at.
Every time we’re at the gym, we’re giving a good look at the teams on the court and we’ll try to feature as many as possible here in this space. In today’s piece, we’re going to bring you all the info you need on the Mayde Creek Rams.
The Squad
First-year coach Bill Hebert is trying to give the Rams a new look in his first year at the helm, especially after the graduation of the team’s top player in the last few seasons, Mecca Freeman. This year’s squad had some interesting pieces in outside hitters Raquel Cortez and Alondra Guardado and middle blocker Jasmine Thomas.
Key Players
Raquel Cortez
Raquel Cortez
The 5’10” Cortez became a key piece for the Rams in her sophomore season mostly because of her offensive power. Very long, she also has a powerful right arm and is clearly the team’s go-to scoring option. Cortez has a good combination of power and skill and is versatile enough to hit and block in the middle too. Her backcourt game is still a work in progress, but is already good enough to avoid any hiccups in serve-receive.
Jasmine Thomas

The long and athletic Thomas also plays an important role in Mayde Creek’s offense down the middle. Standing at 5’10”, she has long arms and can jump well, making contact with the ball at a very high point. Thomas also has quick feet and tremendous potential for improvement. She can hit the ball hard from the right too.
Alondra Guardado
Alondra Guardado
Mostly used as a defensive specialist in her club team Houston Force, Guardado is helping Mayde Creek as an outside hitter this season. Her main contributions to the team still come from the backcourt, where she handles a lot of the serve-receiving duties and also generates transition opportunities with her digs. Guardado is effective at the net too, especially with her ability to direct the ball anywhere on the court, and can be dangerous from the service line as well.
Claire Garcia
Claire Garcia
The 5’4″ Garcia embodies well the spirit of this Mayde Creek team with her fighting spirit on the backcourt. She works really hard on the backcourt and fights for every point as if it was the last. Gracia is very prolific on defense because of her great positioning and good ball control and does great work with her passing as well.
Shelby Lozano
Shelby Lozano
A setter with good size and interesting technical skills, Lozano runs Mayde Creek’s offense smoothly. She’s consistent with her locations and makes good decisions in terms of distributing the ball among her hitters. She can play as a right side hitter when she’s at the net and her size makes of her a real threat on setter dumps too.
