As Sheldon’s captain and the 2021 Southwest Conference Most Valuable Player, senior Bruegman led her team to the finals this weekend and played a major role in Sheldon ultimately taking the gold. Bruegman is an impressive and fun player to watch: She’s dynamic, smart, powerful, and skilled from every position. Running a 6-2 with teammate Alyssa Lewey Alyssa Lewey 6'0" | S Sheldon | 2024 State OR , Bruegman put up perfect sets to her hitters from the back row and put away several kills from the right side while in the front row. She tallied 5 kills against Roseburg, 5 against Summit, and 4 kills versus Jesuit in the tournament’s pool play.
Four-year varsity player and team captain Bakker made the 6A All-Metro first-team last year, and it’s no surprise why. Bakker is an athletic and talented outside hitter who did it all on Saturday: she played excellent defense, passed well on serve receive, and was effective offensively from both the back and front row. In Westview’s first bracket play match against Valley Christian, for example, Bakker ended the three-setter with a long rally in which she took 2 great swings followed by a kill on an overpass.
Playing out of the middle, LeLuge took some big, powerful swings and was a force for Bend offensively on Saturday. LeLuge showed her ability to block well and hit from the outside and middle, and she racked up some points for her team with a tricky and hard-to-pass jump serve. LeLuge had a great connection with her setter, Taylor Clark Taylor Clark 5'8" | S Bend | 2023 State OR , and ran several quick and unstoppable plays in Bend’s first bracket play match against McNary.

Isham was a force for South Salem on Saturday, racking up a large portion of the team’s points. Isham jumps high – she has an impressive 9’11” approach jump – and, during the tournament, she placed the ball well when she wasn’t swinging away. Isham has had a good season so far outside of tournament play, too: She’s racked up 264 kills, 23 aces, 22 total blocks, and 137 digs. Her offensive talent was in full force on Saturday.
Playing from the right side, DeTrant’s energy was unstoppable on Saturday. DeTrant racked up a few kills for McNary in the team’s three-set thriller against Bend. However, it wasn’t just DeTrant’s ability to hit well from either pin that helped McNary secure a win in their first round of bracket play; DeTrant’s spirit and enthusiasm certainly played a big role, too. DeTrant is a fun player to watch given her skill and passion for the game.
Beaux wasn’t the only Bruegman who played lights out on Saturday! Elle, the libero for Sheldon, was a Southwest Conference 2021 first-team recipient, and it’s no surprise why. Bruegman had some excellent serves on Saturday and tallied three aces in a row against South Salem. She was all over the court, making great hustle plays to cover blocks and digging some of the heat from South Salem’s and Westview’s pin hitters. Not only was she on fire on Saturday, but as of October 12, Bruegman had posted 197 digs and 40 assists, leading Sheldon’s back row and defense for the season.
