Heading into the playoffs and the State Championships, here are five players that have risen to the occasion and made a booming impression this season.
Krista Kostoff
Krista Kostoff
Kostoff has been well coached, she takes an aggressive approach on attacks and has great placement when she decides to hit an off-speed shot. Her blocking stands out when you watch her for any length of time, it’s decisive and technically solid with excellent footwork and a great press finish. Setter Lindsey Desai has been giving her well-paced one-balls off the net just enough to work around or through the opposing middles.
Georgia Terrell
Georgia Terrell
The sophomore right-side attacker has shown off a heavy hand for the Kangaroos this season. The ball seems to bury its way into the block and the defenders on the other side of the net when she swings, and Lake Washington has been at their best as a team when she provides a steady compliment to fellow junior attacker Ashley McMaster. The Kangaroos will need both at the top of their game to push through the Sea-King tournament to secure a berth to state in the tough 3Aclassification in Western Washington.
Brynn McGaughy
Brynn McGaughy
McGaughy is on the radar as an elite basketball prospect, but may not want to move off the volleyball court before she finishes growing and allows big-time programs to discover her size and athleticism. She played well against high-level competition at the Crossover classic in Spokane, and it’s the easy movement in transition and defense that is so intriguing. Her swing is fundamentally sound and has blossomed as the year has progressed, She just posted a season-high 19 kills from her MB spot to secure the Bulldogs state tournament spot. Look for a big performance over the weekend at the Sundome for this super sophomore.
Rachel Dunagan
Rachel Dunagan
Dunagan is an easy riser who can put down a kill around or over the block. She was a dominant right side during club season for the NPJ Seattle squad and has signed with UC Davis to continue her volleyball career. Ballard relies on her to attack from everywhere on the court, and she has been piling up kills from sophomore setter’s Violet Martell sweet dishes. The Ballard Beavers have put together a big 15-3 season and take on Holy Names Academy in their next playoff tilt, hoping to pile up wins toward a possible state tournament spot.
Madyn Cervella
Madyn Cervella
The 1st team All-League junior has been a steady force as an outside hitter for the Jaguars. With a high contact point and nice length, Cervella plays bigger than her listed height. She can work with a set off the net and doesn’t make a tremendous amount of errors even when things get wobbly on the Jaguar side of the net. She puts pressure on opposing defenses with a hard-angle shot and willingness to attack the block. North Creek has other stars, including league MVP Kyleene Filimaua, do-everything setter Mariyah Young, and scoring machine Quincy Moran, Cervella could be the piece of the puzzle that helps push the Jaguars past 4A RPI leader Puyallup at the state tournament.
