Continue ReadingThe 2A State tournament at the Yakima SunDome will have several of the highest-end prospects in Washington competing for a title. Regardless of class, several of these players are elite with size and skill that can carry their teams to a championship, and catch the eye of college coaches. The competition should be fierce, many of the perennial powers in 2A return, with Ridgefield, Lynden, Ellensburg, Burlington Edison and Columbia River among the top seeds.
The Spudders roll into the state tournament as the #4 seed. Importantly this places them on the opposite side of the bracket of league rival Columbia River, as the two teams just played in the district final with Ridgefield snapping Columbia River’s 38-game win streak. In that five-set match, Andrew posted 26 kills and along with fellow middle Hailey, McEllrath combined for 13 blocks. When the team is clicking, the offense is among the best in the state at any level, and with her high contact point and accuracy, Andrew can terminate in any situation.

Ephrata relies on Mills to deliver big kills when needed. The sophomore spent her freshman year in the middle but has made the move outside for her second year of school ball. She has delivered tremendously, and her kills have jumped along with her digs. One of the most impressive aspects of her game is the deadly jump float serve she has dialed in this season. She is one of the best servers in the 2A and state ranks overall. Expect Mills to ramp it up another level as a junior after another full club season as an outside.

The sophomore attacker is a long, left handed punisher from the pin, with soft hands as a setter as well. This year, she played on the pin exclusively, and became the main attacking option for Burlington Edison. She excelled in the role, and the Tigers have had a monster year, sporting a 17-2 record as they make their way to the SunDome. Fellow sophomore Mia Whitlock has been a great complement attacking and performs well in serve receive, giving the team a nice one-two option on offense. These two will underclassmen will be the driving forces as the Tigers seek to improve on the fourth place trophy they earned in 2021.

The Greyhounds have relied on outstanding play from senior Keane over her high school career, last year she was the 2A GSL MVP, and first-team all-state. The outside is the outlet any time Pullman is out of system, and she does not shy away from the role, finding ways to get a ball over even if the set is less than ideal. She is a shot maker, tooling blocks, and finding holes in defense with hard swings and off-speed attacks. Pullman juniors middle Sophie Armstrong and libero Lily McNannay are first-team players who make the defense click for the team.

The Biola commit looks even more comfortable at outside hitter this school season than she did during club, and that is a problem for Lynden opponents. Her height and contact point are elite on the outside for the 2A class, and the Lions setter, Grace Rice, will run her down the middle on a 2 ball or out of the backrow. The two juniors have great chemistry, Rice is athletic and dynamic, and has a great knack for finding Shumate in excellent matchups. Lynden carries the #1 seed into the tournament, and will have to claw through a difficult set of teams to take home the championship trophy.

From a volleyball family, Dreves has a fluid, natural arm swing, and her movement on the court is athletic and effortless. When she rises to blast a ball high line or hard angle, her length and explosiveness show what a high-level pin-headed to the SEC looks like. The Rapids have their main rival Ridgefield on the other side of the bracket and will be looking to avenge their first loss in 38 matches by reaching the state final. Dreves attacks opposing defenses in and out of system consistently with swings that have pace and are put in tough-to-handle spots. Columbia River overall puts constant pressure on the opposing team to play excellent defense, free balls and mistakes are kept to a minimum when they are in the flow.

This senior setter is a smooth operator, with a willingness to get to every second ball and the fast feet to make it there. She is a returning first-team all-league player who posted 731 assists, 326 digs, 108 kills, 56 aces, and 25 blocks last year and knows how to win. She has committed to Point Loma for next season and will look to guide North Kitsap to a top-eight finish to cap an outstanding high school career.

Washington may be the most unique team you can watch this year in the state tournament. Everyone on the court is 5’4-5’6, if you believe the listed roster measurements, and the Patriots out of Tacoma just keep coming at opposing teams with defense and grit. Piredo attacks the defense from both pins, and from the pipe when Washington is in a tight spot. The team digs a ton of balls, and Piredo just keeps coming at the block, tooling, chipping, and turning balls at super tight angles. She will really rip it out of the back row, and competes as well anyone in the state.
