There was a ton of talent at the gym and, as we do in each event of the series, it’s time to give a shoutout to some of the players who stood out the most. I’ll get things going by highlighting some of the setters who were on top of their games at the Texas Tornados courts.
Dunn is coming off a tremendously productive high school season and anyone watching her on the court during our Top 250 Expo easily understood why. She has the entire package, combining excellent technical skills, impressive physical strength and a very, very high volleyball IQ. Dunn is very quick to get to the ball when the pass is off the net and is incredibly precise when setting to the pins. She also worked really hard on defense, giving it all to keep the ball up, and showed she’s wise beyond her ears, making good decisions time and time again. She also got to hit on some drills and used her power to perform well in that area of the game too.

Kuehn is an emerging setter in the Katy area and she certainly showed what she’s about on Saturday. She’s a tall setter at 5’10” and uses her length and long arms to make good pressure with her blocking, but is extremely mobile on the court. Her ball handling is incredibly smooth and she typically does an excellent job with her ball distribution. Kuehn also did very well on the defensive drills and is an excellent server. She has a very good attitude on the court too as she’s always calm and appearing to having fun.

Perry first impressed me with her ability and determination to play defense during the warmup drills. She has very good ball control and did a couple of truly impressive overhead digs. When she had a chance to set, she showed she’s really good at that too, displaying excellent consistency with her locations and doing a great job with passes off the net. Perry is the type of setter that quietly gets the job done and makes her teammates better with her hard work.

I’ve watched Hynds play quite a few times during the last high school season, but she had somewhat of a limited role with her Tompkins team, coming in to serve and play defense – two roles she executed pretty well. It was great to see how great and smooth of a setter she is during our Top 250 Expo. Hynds’ release is very clean and her locations are always very precise. She is also very active and quick on the court and works really hard on defense.
Six-foot setters don’t grow in trees and Sawyer showed to be one with a bright future during our Top 250 Expo. She’s more mobile than you would expect for a player of her size and is very smooth on the ball. I loved how she uses the length of her arms to send the ball across the court and to push it fast toward the target. She also displayed a great attitude on the court, communicating well with her teammates, and showed good ball control early on while playing defense and passing. Sawyer is nowhere near her potential yet, but has a solid foundation with strong physical and technical tools.
