However many teams went to the prestigious MLK event in Kansas City. I was pulling double duty this weekend. I was luckily able to bounce around between matches to watch the other courts. Lets take a look at how the tournament finished up and some of the standout players.
Pools:
Pool 1: Lawton Heat 16-1, Dynamite 16, and Velocity 16.
Pool 2: Ok Charge 16 West, Ignite 16-1, and Stingray 16 Select.
Pool 3: 16 Chaos, Virago 16-1, CATVB 16-1, and 405 Drive 16-1.
Gold Bracket Play:
Gold Quarter Finals: Virago over Velocity, Chaos over Stingray
Gold Semi Finals: Virago over Lawton Heat, Ignite over Chaos
Gold Finals: Ignite over Virago
Players:
Jayden Smith #17 -Outside Hitter for Virago 16-1. She attends Sand Springs high School. Jayden was the team’s number one scoring option. She had a really nice mix of line kills with well disguised off speed shots. She also was a force in the back row, recording multiple pancakes on the day. She will likely be one of the starting outside hitters for SS her junior year.
Amira Escoffery #11- Outside Hitter for 405 Drive 16-1. She attends Harding Charter Prep. VERTICAL!! She undoubtedly had the largest touch point at the gym this weekend. She was a menace at the net for hitters. She can extend over the net and press into hitters faces. I would find it hard to imagine she isn’t a leader for her high school on and off the court. She did a great job of attacking each ball that was set her way. No matter the quality of set, she would better the outcome.
Mikayla Stanley #1- Defensive Specialist for Ignite 16-1. She attends Yukon High School. Ignite played amazing defense all day as a team but Mikayla was the constant in all 6 rotations for them. It was hard to find a weak spot in the defense or in serve receive. If she is not already helping Yukon’s varsity program, she will be sooner rather than later.
Brooklyn Custer #8 -Defensive Specialist for Virago 16-1. She attends Sapulpa High School. She had a great tournament in the back row. Her effort to track down balls is impeccable. She also had some timely aces that really helped propel her team. She will likely find her way into the starting lineup next season for perennial state bound Sapulpa.
Aniyah Durham #4- Outside Hitter for Ignite 16-1. She attends Classen SAS High School. Aniyah was a key player in the gold championship. I bet her hitter efficiency was off the charts. Timely power swings mixed with smart controlled swings and minimal errors makes for a deadly hitter.
Olivia Bradford #8- Outside Hitter for Chaos 16-1. She attends AM-PO High School. She could very well be in the mix for All State her senior year in class 3A for AM-PO. AM-PO made the state tournament this past season and has a storied tradition of doing very well season after season. Olivia has the ability to put some solid pop on the ball when she wants to.
Matti Waitman #13- Setter for Chaos 16-1. She attends Tuttle High School. If she was a bit taller, she would be dominate as a 5-1 setter. She has a very sneaky left handed swing when she is in the front row. She also is a workhorse, she was tracking down just about every ball in their 30 x 30 square. She will be a cornerstone for this young Tuttle program going forward.
Addyson Flint #10- Outside Hitter for Lawton Heat 16-1. She attends Lawton Mac High School. She is an athlete folks. She can pass, she can hit, she can serve, and probably set if asked to. When I played them this weekend, the game plan was serve anyone but her and when she gets in the front row, we must shade her side of the court. She is that big of a difference maker for this team. She does a great job of moving early to the ball in serve receive and transitioning with some authority when playing defense to be available.
Another great weekend of volleyball for the state of Oklahoma. We will be out and about at the Adidas Classic in Tulsa next weekend. If you have a chance to come say hi, we would love to meet you.
