The Class of 2030 defenders featured in this article are beginning to develop those traits.   Some are learning how to lead more effectively through communication. Others are becoming more comfortable trusting their reads, handling pressure, and making adjustments in real time. Several talked about growth in serve receive, out-of-system play, and court awareness, areas that often separate defenders as the game gets faster.   What stood out most was not a single play or highlight moment. It was the way these athletes think about development. They are paying attention to the details, seeking coaching, embracing challenges, and learning how to impact matches beyond the stat sheet.   The athletes below reflected on recent experiences that helped shape their confidence and growth. Together, they represent a group of young defenders who are already building the habits that make the position so valuable.    Brielle Bischofberger's growth this season can be traced back to one skill that many young liberos overlook until it becomes essential: out-of-system setting. As a defensive specialist, she understands that extending rallies and keeping hitters available in transition often comes down to the quality of the second contact. Her commitment to improving that area of her game is already translating into more accurate sets and more scoring opportunities for her teammates.   That development has expanded her confidence. Brielle described feeling stronger in multiple phases of the game at UA Next, from communication and hustle to passing, hitting, and even recording a block. With her team trailing by four points and facing game point, Brielle stepped back to serve knowing the pressure was squarely on her shoulders. Instead of shrinking from the moment, she embraced it. Serving, defense, and communication were the areas that gave her the most confidence during camp. Those skills allowed her to compete aggressively while continuing to bring energy to the athletes around her.   One area that has taken a noticeable step forward this season is her out-of-system setting. Olivia specifically pointed to her ability to set with her hands more consistently, something that became evident during camp drills. For a libero, that development creates additional value and expands the number of ways she can impact a match.   Interestingly, the camp moment she highlighted had nothing to do with volleyball itself. Meeting new athletes, building relationships, and stepping outside her comfort zone was what made her most proud. That willingness to connect with others is often a reflection of confidence too. After attending twenty camps over four years, her perspective on growth and development carries weight.   What stands out most is how intentional she has become about improvement. Every rep, every drill, and every interaction is viewed as an opportunity to move forward. Her confidence does not come from believing she will never make mistakes. It comes from understanding that growth happens through action.   One of the moments she felt most proud of had little to do with her own performance. After already earning her high school invitation, Alexys shifted her focus toward helping others. She identified three athletes she believed were capable of earning invitations and made it her mission to support, encourage, and celebrate them throughout camp. All three ultimately achieved their goal.   That story says a great deal about her leadership.   UA Next has taught Alexys that confidence and composure are often the true separators at higher levels. Talent exists everywhere. The athletes who consistently rise are the ones who trust themselves enough to perform freely when the pressure arrives.   Looking ahead, her goals remain ambitious. She wants to defend bigger hitters, pass tougher serves, make better reads, and continue testing herself against stronger competition. Her reflection on the camp's closing 6v6 competition captured that growth perfectly. Standing behind the service line with everyone watching, she chose not to focus on the pressure. Instead, she trusted herself, delivered an ace, and watched her team celebrate together. For Alison, it became more than a successful serve. It became a moment of belief.   That theme continued throughout her day. Competing against top athletes reinforced that she belongs at that level. The experience helped her understand that confidence is often the difference between holding back and performing at your best.   Leadership is another area she continues to embrace. Whether it is helping blockers identify offensive tendencies or serving as a calming presence during pressure moments, Alison wants to impact matches beyond her own touches. After transitioning from outside hitter to libero, much of this season has been spent learning how to cover more court, trust her reads, and become comfortable carrying greater responsibility in serve receive. Ryan's focus is to be the loudest player on the court, helping hitters identify attacking lanes, and creating energy for the athletes around her. Those qualities become increasingly valuable as the level rises because great liberos impact matches long before they touch the ball.   One of the defining moments came after she struggled with a setter dump. Instead of allowing frustration to linger, Ryan listened to a coach's feedback, replayed the sequence in her head, and made the adjustment. The next few setter dumps were no longer a problem. The moment revealed something coaches consistently value: the ability to learn and respond in real time.   Ryan also came away with a clear understanding of what separates athletes at higher levels. Talent alone is not enough. Decision-making, confidence, communication, and emotional control become increasingly important when everyone on the court is capable.   Ryan is focused on becoming an even better reader of the game.
