Everyone is taking a little break for the holidays and will get back to full power on the first weekend of the month, so we’re taking the week to feature some of the 17s teams from the Houston area that we believe have the potential to make really good things over the next few months.
Texas Legacy 17 Elite
The top 17s teams from the Texas Legacy Club located in the Tomball area was third in their season-opening tournament, the FAST Warm Up, with a strong campaign of five wins and one loss. They have good depth in basically every position, with Anna Blaine Anna Blaine 6'1" | S Concordia Lutheran | 2024 State TX and Zoe Gun at setter, Kaitlyn Davis Kaitlyn Davis 5'9" | OH Tomball | 2024 TX , Kristina Cote Kristina Cote 5'11" | OH Klein Collins | 2024 TX and Sadie McRae at outside hitter and Skylar Christopher, Grace Ellis and Lauren Dale in the middle.
Key Players
Davis is one of those players who are capable of offering strong contributions all across the board. There are really no clear flaws in her game and the dynamic outside hitter is heavily involved with everything Texas Legacy 17 Elite does on the court. Davis is incredibly technically-gifted and displays great efficiency in her backcourt game, being a consistent and reliable passer and a productive defender. Her game at the net is just as complete as Davis is very explosive and a good jumper, but also has all the resources to score with tips, shots and by tooling the block.
Highlights
Tall setters are hard to come by, but size is only one of the several assets Blaine brings to the court. She’s incredibly mobile for a player who stands at 6’1″ and floats around the court really well, easily getting to passes off the net. Her touch on the ball is always very clean and precise and Blaine is also very calm and intelligent, running a somewhat simple, but very efficient offense. She’s extremely consistent and reliable and also impacts the game in a big way with her blocking and setter dumps.
Highlights
When thinking of a libero, most coaches would like to see a hard-working player who consistently gets the job done without much fanfare. That’s exactly Alvarado, who uses her excellent positioning and quickness to make difficult digs look easy when playing defense. Also very technical and calm on the ball, she does a great job with her serve-receive too, covering a lot of the court and consistently delivering accurate passes to her setter.
Highlights
Skylar Christopher
Skylar Christopher
A very physical player, Christopher does a very good job in impacting the game at the net. A six-footer, she has good athleticism and is surprisingly mobile and is capable of quickly going from one pin to the other when blocking. She also has good size and reading, making thing harder for the hitters that want to challenge her. Christopher is also an interesting offensive piece with her ability to hit multiple sets and to get into a rhtyhm without much effort.
Rylee Henderson
Rylee Henderson
Henderson has the perfect profile for someone who plays on the right. She’s not super tall at 5’10”, but is long and jumps very well. Besides making contact with the ball at a very high point, she’s also capable of swinging hard even when off the net. Her offense is very complete as she’s capable of finding good angles and tooling the block as well. Two other things that make of Henderson a prolific scorer are her ability to hit different sets and the fact that she doesn’t shy away from the big moments.
