Continue ReadingSince 1999, Webfoot Jrs. has continued to produce competitive club teams out of Eugene, Oregon. With a large portion of athletes from last season’s Webfoot 18-1 team returning, the Webfoot 18-1 Elite team should be able to maintain a high level of play. A majority of this team has played together during the high school season, making for some impeccable chemistry. Six of the thirteen rostered athletes are fresh off a 6A State championship for Sheldon High School. Another bulk of the athletes come from Roseburg High School, about an hour’s commute to the practice facility. The rest are from assorted schools in and around the Eugene area. Leading this talented squad is Webfoot royalty Brian Wodke, whose wife Martine is the club director and head coach at Sheldon High School. Wodke has been coaching the 18-1 team for many seasons, so this group is in good hands.
We will be highlighting some of the Webfoot 18-1 Elite athletes to watch this season below.
Lucky for Webfoot, they will be returning senior libero Bruegman. She had a breakout senior high school season as the primary libero for 6A State champions Sheldon High School. She has showcased steady yet significant improvement to her back row game over the past few years and has risen to the top of her class as the #5 defensive specialist. Her serve receive is consistent, and her defense is elite. Recently, she committed to play D1 volleyball at Eastern Washington University.
Green is a stand-out sophomore hailing from Pleasant Hill High School. She had a stellar season with the Billies and proved she could not be stopped, taking the #1 spot for most kills in Oregon with 423. At 6 feet, Green can play anywhere across the front row but could be utilized as an outside for this team. The team lost senior powerhouse Fife, who committed to Utah for beach, and has decided to focus on her sand game in preparation for college. With this spot up for grabs, Green may be the one to take her place. She has proved she can hit from the pin with the best of them.
Tupua has been a steady offensive and defensive asset for this group since joining the club her sophomore year. She is consistent in all aspects of her game and makes for a well-rounded six-rotation outside hitter. She is coming off a solid season with Siuslaw High School, where she was rarely seen off the court and contributed to two major upsets in the 3A State tournament. For Webfoot, she will likely see the court in a similar fashion to years prior, as a six-rotation pin hitter.
Pinard was a major pick-up for this team after competing with NPJ last season. Previously having to commute to Salem, the senior decided to play for a club a bit closer to home for her final season, so she switched to Webfoot. Already committed to Western Oregon, she will be a critical part of this team’s success. The group needed a high-level setter with Julia Pangburn graduating. She is quick, a good decision-maker, athletic, and confident. She and 2024 Alyssa Lewey Alyssa Lewey 6’0″ | S Sheldon | 2024 State OR are the two rostered setters, so it will be interesting to see how they are utilized.
Highlights
Wood has been a devoted Webfoot athlete since 12U, working through their program and perfecting her craft as a dominant middle blocker. She is returning to the team after contributing mightily to Sheldon’s State championship. The senior has been a major offensive weapon for this group season after season. She continues to bring athleticism, a quick arm, and an infectious, competitive edge to the court. She has committed to Rocky Mountain College, an NAIA powerhouse in Colorado.
