Most of the top prospects in the region will be on the court and we’ve been using the week to highlight some of the most promising players who will be battling in the Alamo City over the weekend. In our final positional preview, let’s take a look at some of the right side hitters who can have a major impact on the tournament:
Jones will offer a reliable presence on the right for Alamo 18 Premier in the 17-18 Girls division. She has established herself as one of the top right side hitters in the state and never stopped improving and developing her game. Jones always used her length and power really well to score points, but she’s gotten even better lately, adding new shots to her arsenal and improving her efficiency when hitting from the left and the middle. She plays with incredible intensity and is very well-versed with her blocking too.
Macey Brown
Macey Brown
A lefty, Brown offers some power and length on the right for SA Force 181 Darkside in the 17-18 Girls division. Also capable of playing in the middle, she’s a very good blocker, who reads plays well, uses her length to pressure opponents and has excellent timing. Brown also has some interesting efficiency on offense as she makes contact with the ball at a very high point and swings toward the end line, staying away from opposing blockers. She’s also very positive on the court, providing a good influence to her teammates.
Originally an outside hitter, Calvillo has been playing on the right with her stacked Alamo 17 Premier team that will be in action in the 17-18 Girls division. The trademark of her game is undoubtedly her powerful offense, which makes her bounce balls left and right, but Calvillo has much more to add. She’s athletic, very versatile and efficient offensively, but also very strong from a technical standpoint and does a very good job with her passing and defense.
A new face in the state of Texas, Hughes immediately became the starter on the right for Alamo 16 Premier, which will also be competing in the 17-18 Girls division. She recently moved to San Antonio coming from Oregon and the fact that she has been able to immediately make an impact in strong teams such as Alamo 16 Premier and Cornerstone Christian speaks volumes about her quality. A lefty, Hughes is a heavy hitter, but she has endless resources to score and is also a very strong blocker.
Highlights
Giselle Orellana
Giselle Orellana
Expect Orellana to be the main offensive player in her SA Magic 16 Elite team that will test itself against older opponents in the 17-18 Girls division. Her offensive power is certainly her calling card as she’s a player who will play aggressively, bounce balls and overpower blocks at will, but Orellana is also very versatile and resourceful. She can score from the left and the backcourt too and is also a solid passer and a very good server.
