The Premier Division serves as the top level available for the 16s, with no Open Division available. Here are five of the top performers we watched over the weekend.
Matched up against A4 Volley, Caoili showed off her skilled all-around game. As an outside hitter with excellent hands and a feel for the game, she always handles the ball cleanly in scramble situations. Although undersized at the pin, she put down an overpass strongly and followed that up with hard swings off the net and out of system. A4 tried Caoili early in serve receive, she was able to deliver the ball on target and A4 moved on to other players. Later on in the match, she started to find the blocker’s hands, tooling several attempts for kills.
Highlights
Rohner worked extremely hard on defense, giving maximum effort to post a big block pin-to-pin against A4. In a second-set PSVBA win, she had several soft blocks allowing the outside hitters for her team to get excellent scoring opportunities. She likes to find the seam running a “3”, and can use finesse dropping in a soft tip right over the opposing middle blocker. Keep an eye on her fellow middle, Ishna Tickoo. Tickoo tallied solid stuff blocks to build momentum for her team all weekend long.
Gabrielle Reich
Gabrielle Reich
Reich is a taller libero, and that length lets her track down high balls to the corner and stretches out to pick up tips and roll shots before they find the ground. She was rock solid in serve receive for her CPA 16 Drew team, and when she was served she allowed CPA to run their offense through three solid middles. Reich has a high ceiling, as she has not always played the libero position, but her fundamentals are excellent. She will continue to be more aggressive in commanding the court and has excellent coaching through Mead and CPA.
Claire Haight
Claire Haight
Haight patrolled the middle for her Shockwave 16 squad in Vegas, playing in the Club Division. Shockwave went 4-5 for the tournament, and Haight was constantly working to be available in transition for her team. She was able to deliver on quick sets with a compact, efficient arm swing, and started to move the ball around the block finding the deep corner for kills. She reads the opposing setter, hedging as a blocker when she knows where the ball is headed.
Lily Roberts
Lily Roberts
The RVC 16 Kari crew finished with a strong 9th place finish in the 16 Premier Division. Roberts is showing a bouncy presence in the middle, adding to a strong offensive attack led by setters Araleigh Arnold and Kendall Focht. As a blocker she showed strong effort working pin to pin, and made some nice early reads when the opposing setter showed where the ball was going. Roberts was effective as a server as well, she delivered a flat, jump float that gave teams problems at times.
