Bredenberg does a great job getting into an athletic split stance and ready to move. She reacts quickly to chase a ball hit off the block or crash into the middle of the court for the finesse shot. Bredenberg’s reaction time is about as quick as it comes. She gets her hips under the ball and greats a sound platform that keeps the ball on her side of the net. The experience and exposure against top attackers early in her career have paid off.
One thing that I really like about Nistor is that I’ve seen her play equally well in the middle back as I have in left back. I’m a big believer that liberos should be able to play every back row position at a high level. Nistor has been on the rise, getting better and better over the past couple years. Her hard work is paying off and she is starting to shine. Nistor is a calm player in the back court that keeps things simple with her effort and confidence.
Joesting plays with a competitive fire that drives her to excel in the back row. She plays with sound technique and a quick first step to the ball. Joesting passes midline or angle out of serve receive with such a smooth confidence and strong platform. She plays with a grittiness that is a vital characteristic of top defenders. Defensively, Joesting doesn’t shy away from getting a little beat up in order to make a big play and fire up her team.
Northern Lights has built some really great defensive talent and you can really see it at every level 4 teams deep. Roggenkamp takes care of all the routine stuff but I especially like her ability and control to dig with her hands. She does a nice job releasing and taking care of the roll shot in the middle and taking the outside hitters inside angle to dig the power alley.
Erickson plays with that Champlin Park swagger and grit that we’ve seen from a number of talented players from that program. She does a great job making the tough digs and fighting to stick with a float serve. Erickson is light on her feet, creates solid angles with her platform, and is always reading the play of the ball. She does a great job keeping her platform away from her body in serve receive. Erickson protects her deep corners and knows how to get under the ball with her platform and hips quickly.
