Teams from Texas are all ramping up in order to bring their best game in the most important moment of the season and even those that won’t make the trip to Chicago are also in their best form after months of practice and competing together.
This past weekend, we followed one of the tournaments that were going on in the Houston area, the Skyline Classic #10, held at the popular Houston Skyline Volleyball Club. We were following the 17 Girls Division, which had nine teams from the region in action, and will bring our positional reports and All-Tournament team selection during the week.
We start with some of the setters that led their teams on Saturday:
A new addition to Woodlands Revolution this season, Hoot was setting for their 17 Adidas team that finished fifth in the division. Although very technical, she also displayed some interesting physical tools, including her 5’11” frame and a strong lower body that took her anywhere on the court in no time. Hoot was consistently accurate with her locations and even when she had to bumpset, she was still able to remain her sets in a hittable area. She had some good serving runs during the day and made some strong plays on the defense too.

Even though she was playing one age group up, Cicherski did a great job running the offense of her H Skyline 17 White team which finished third. She’s very quick with her mind and her feet, being able to see the game before everyone else and execute with great efficiency. Her playmaking was very creative as she often looked for unexpected plays to get her hitters in the best possible position to score and, even when she seemed to have forced a set a little bit, she was still accurate enough. Cicherski also worked hard on defense, getting a lot of touches from her right back position.

Setting for W Revolution 17 Premier, which was second in the division, Medford stood out as one of the top players in her position. Her combination of size and technical skills makes of her a very interesting player and her high volleyball IQ is the difference-maker in her game and Medford is really capable of thriving by playing most strategically or in situations in which she needs to improvise. The setter also seems to have developed strong chemistry with each of her hitters as she had a variety of different sets for all of them.

Lauryn Brown
Lauryn Brown
The starting setter of the Houston Stellar 17 Select team that was sixth, Brown displayed some interesting qualities during the day. She was consistently accurate with her setting, repeatedly sending the ball into the same locations and deciding to keep things simple when she was out of system. One of the main things about Brown’s distribution was that she had a great sense of which of her hitters were in better form at all moments and wasn’t shy of continuing to feed them. She also had some success with her serving and made some interesting digs – Brown can also play as a defensive specialist.
Anaya Jabbar
Anaya Jabbar
Although her Katy United 17 Fathom team ranked ninth in the event, Jabbar still had good things to show at the Skyline Classic #10. She’s also a track and field athlete and her quickness on the court was really impressive, especially when she had to track passes off the net. Jabbar was also very accurate with her setting when she was operating in system, consistently putting her hitters in a good position to score. She was very active and efficient on the backcourt too, serving with power and precision and getting several touches on defense.
