Continue ReadingOne of the more disappointing aspects of club volleyball is the inability of many setters to develop their setting skills through six rotations. For the most part, unless the setter has a tremendous ability to hit or block they are substituted out for a right side. This right side usually stands taller, puts up a better block and provides more offense at the net. But not always.
Most club teams focus on running a 6/2 offense. The college game for the most part uses just one setter to run a 5/1. Part of that may be the playing time issues. Clubs like to have at least two setters on their roster and the best opportunity to play them both is with a 6/2. High school ball gives setters a better opportunity to run a 5/1.
Below, the setters who play all six rotations in club ball. Some run a 5/1, while others remain in the game as a right side hitter.
Greta Barvick Greta Barvick 5'10" | S Chelsea Academy | 2024 State VA (Blue Ridge/Chelsea Academy) – When she played for Vienna Elite the previous season she ran a 5/1 offense for their 17 team. Once the high school season started her coach used her on the left side where she led her team in hitting. This year for Blue Ridge 17 they run a 6/2, but Greta stays in the front row to hit right side. At 5’10 she brings a powerful attack to the net, contributing as one of the main offensive weapons for the Blue Ridge team.
Because she did not set during the high school season her start to the season as a setter was inconsistent. As the season progressed her setting improved and Blue Ridge benefited. They won the Chesapeake 17 Regionals and will play in the National Division at Nationals in Chicago. Greta reminds me a lot of Milan Rex Milan Rex 5'11" | S Alexandria City | 2023 State #147 Nation VA with her ability to provide some offensive juice while still having the hands to run an offense. A six rotation player whether she sets or hits.
Isabel Ostvig Isabel Ostvig 5'10" | S Colonial Forge | 2024 State VA (Virginia Juniors/Colonial Forge) – One of my favorite setters to watch. She flies through the air with her jump sets, flicking the ball behind her or in front of her with such ease and consistency. The ball just floats as it waits for the hitter to mash. She runs the middle well and keeps the blockers guessing. At 5’10”, when she plays the front row, she brings the heat. One of the more powerful hitters for Virginia Juniors.
An extremely athletic girl who competed in track, winning the high and long jump, as well as the 300-meter hurdles. She also placed second in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles and third in shot put. Isabel has committed to the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Virginia Juniors will compete in the Premier Division at AAUs. UMBC will be very happy with the setter they recruited.
MacKenzie Calhoun MacKenzie Calhoun 5'10" | S River Hill | 2024 State VA (Columbia/River Hill) – MacKenzie runs a 5/1 offense for Columbia. She gives opponents a number of different looks with her setting. Her jump sets are frequent, drawing the middle blockers up. The offense runs fast and fluid with her quick distribution of sets. She runs fast to the ball and always seems to have the ability to use her hands no matter where the pass. When called upon MacKenzie can contribute to an offense. During her sophomore year in high school she dazzled with over 400 kills. Columbia will play in the Premier Division at AAUs. They finished fourth in the Chesapeake Regional Qualifiers.
Chloe Hokenson Chloe Hokenson 6'1" | S Langley | 2024 State VA (Virginia Elite/Langley) – At 6’1″ Chloe has the height to play front row. She also brings a powerful arm swing that can send missiles to the floor. For Langley she set a 6’2″ and stayed in the front row as one of the main offensive weapons. Class 6 voted her to the All State first team. She also earned player of the year honors in the Liberty District. For Virginia Elite she normally sets a 5/1 but the option remains to take advantage of her hitting ability in the front row. Her approach jump falls just short of 10 feet (9’6″). Virginia Elite will compete in the Open Division at AAUs.

Lindsay Kelley Lindsay Kelley 5'9" | S Glenelg | 2024 State VA (Maryland Juniors/Glenelg) – Another setter that runs a 5/1 offense for a talented Maryland Juniors team. They nabbed a spot in the Freedom Division for Junior Nationals, with Lindsay running the offense. She seems to like to run a fast paced game, distributing shoots to the outside and quick sets to the middles. With a number of offensive attackers she distributes the sets well, finding the hot hand and using her back row hitters effectively. Her management of the offense impresses. Defenses are kept off balance and hitters are going against only one blocker the majority of time.
Jaylyn Simon Jaylyn Simon 5'9" | S Holy Cross | 2024 State VA (Virginia Juniors/Holy Cross) – She plays opposite Isabel Ostvig Isabel Ostvig 5'10" | S Colonial Forge | 2024 State VA as the other setter in the back row for Virginia Juniors. Despite being 5’9″ she brings the hops to hit the ball with authority from the right side. She also sets for Holy Cross and was selected to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) second team. Her main responsibility is to find Emerson Sellman Emerson Sellman 6'4" | OH Academy of Holy Cross | 2024 State #5 Nation VA , easily the top player in the DMV area. Virginia Juniors will compete in the Premier Division at AAUs.

Isabelle Bardin Isabelle Bardin 6'3" | S Flint Hill | 2025 State #121 Nation VA (Metro/Flint Hill) – One of the more promising setters in the Chesapeake Region. She has sprouted to 6’2′. Metro normally has a right side substitute for a setter in the front row. Not so with Isabelle. She remains in the front row to provide the team offense with her hitting. Isabelle also sets for Flint Hill in a 6/2. They won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state championship. She earned a spot on the second team All State. The National Team Development Program (NTDP) has also grabbed her to attend a few of their training sessions. A very promising player from the class of 2025. Metro will play in the National Division at Junior Nationals in Chicago.
Peyton McGee Peyton McGee 5'10" | S Norfolk Academy | 2025 State VA (Beach Elite/Norfolk Academy) – She stands just 5’9″ but her approach jump reaches 9’7″. She hit right side for Norfolk Academy. They made it to the finals in the VISAA and were the only team to take a set off Flint Hill. For Beach Elite she sets, playing up with the 17 team. It would not surprise me that next year she sets for Norfolk Academy. While she brings a strong right arm to the right side it would be interesting to see her set a 5/1. Her older sister Reagan McGee Reagan McGee 5'9" | OH Norfolk Academy | 2023 State VA (class of 2023) played an effective left side at 5’9″. Peyton chooses to travel a different road using her setting skills to define her role. Beach Elite 17 will be playing in the Premier Division in AAUs.

Shylah Swope Shylah Swope 5'10" | S Herndon | 2025 State VA (Virginia Elite 16/Herndon) – A smooth set of hands that can distribute the ball consistently to all areas of the court. She stands 5’10” but can reach 9’8″ with her approach jump. Herndon uses her to set a 5/1 but her offense on the right side is so strong they sometimes go to a 6’2″. Virginia Elite uses her in a 5/1. In terms of technique, she may be the best setter in this class. The Liberty District named her to the first team as a sophomore. A true leader on the court. Virginia Elite will be playing in Open at the AAUs.
Breeze Johnson (Blue Ridge/Daniel Morgan Middle School) – To complete this list of ten I finish with this setter from the class of 2028. She sets for the Blue Ridge 14 team. They will play in the National Division at Junior Nationals. She stands close to 5’10” and could continue to grow. Blue Ridge runs a 6’2″ with Breeze hitting right side. Definitely a player to watch for the future. A lot of her skills have been learned on the beach. Perhaps that is where she got her cool name.
Class of 2026 setters
There were not a lot of six rotation setters in the class of 2026. A few to watch for the future.
Claire Mo Claire Mo 5'10" | S Langley | 2026 State VA (Paramount/Langley) – She set for Langley as a frosh. Langley went to the quarter finals in States, losing to the eventual State Champion Alexandria City. She also set Paramount 16 to a USA Division bid in the Sunshine Classic and a second place finish at the Chesapeake Regional Qualifier. In both cases she does not play the front row. She stands 5’9″, plays up with the 16s at Paramount but needs to improve her vertical (8’8″ block jump).
Sofie Ferrell Sofie Ferrell 5'9" | S Woodson | 2026 State VA (Virginia Elite/Woodson) – She set a little bit for Woodson as a frosh. It would not surprise me to see her run a 5/1 this coming high school season. Excellent hands for setting. She stands 5’9″ but also needs to improve her vertical (8’7″ block jump) to become a presence in the front row. Virginia Elite will be playing Open in AAUs.
Highlights
Wynn Mendez Eaton Wynn Mendez Eaton 5'10" | S St. John's College | 2026 State VA (EC Power/St. Johns) – As a frosh she shared setting a 5/1 for St. Johns. With EC Power she played right side as a hitter and sometimes set a 5/1. She stands 5’9″ but needs more experience as a hitter to be effective as a right side pin. East Coast will play in the American Division at Junior Nationals.
Charis Burge Charis Burge 5'10" | S Bullis | 2026 State VA (Metro/Urbana) – At 5’10 she has the height to play front row. But when you play for Metro they have a number of right sides who stand 6’1″ or greater that they can use to fill the position. As a frosh for Urbana she ranked third on the team in kills and third in assists. So she can bring the offense in the front row if given an opportunity. Urbana also won the Class 4A Maryland State championship. Metro will play in the Open Division at Junior Nationals.
Anasofia Zanellato Anasofia Zanellato 6'0" | S Academy Of The Holy Cross | 2026 State VA (Virginia Juniors/Madison) – For Virginia Juniors she set when she played front row but rotated out in the back row. At 6’0″ she brings tremendous potential to the setting game with her length. For Madison as a frosh she set for them in the back row at the beginning of the season but saw more front row playing time as the season progressed. Virginia Juniors will play in the Aspire Division at AAUs.
