Now, with multiple signing days, transfer portals and NLI, college rosters can change with the blink of an eye, completely altering how a program may need to build its roster through recruiting.
The Class of 2023 is making its final touches on its commitments, while the Class of 2024 is laying a foundation for the future.
A number of top 2024 prospects have made verbal commitments over recent weeks, helping us see which college programs are starting to bolster their rosters with in-state talent.
Western Michigan
The Broncos are hitting the Class of 2024 hard here in Michigan, already earning commitments from two of the top 10 players in the class. Both libero Carley Piercefield Carley Piercefield 5'4" | DS/L Lakewood | 2024 State #90 Nation MI (Lakewood) and outside Elana Erickson Elana Erickson 5'10" | OH Forest Hills Northern | 2024 State #79 Nation MI (Forest Hills Northern) are set to be future Broncos. Piercefield has established herself as one of the top defenders in the state since she was a freshman. Her confidence and leadership skills have continued to grow and make her a great Division 1 college prospect. Erickson has been part of a powerful FHN offense and will have the chance to really show she can be a lead hitter in the upcoming 2023 season. Erickson has been working hard on polishing her all-around skills, which should lead to the Broncos getting a very reliable player.
Grand Valley State
The Lakers are looking to make a push in the GLIAC by continuing to bring in Michigan talent to the program. Already with a solid foundation of in-state players, GVSU has received 2024 commitments from middle Johanna Tillman Johanna Tillman 6'2" | MB Dakota | 2024 State MI (Dakota) and libero Olivia Behen Olivia Behen 5'5" | DS/L Saline | 2024 State MI (Saline). Behen was a huge piece to Saline’s run to the Division 1 semifinals in 2022. She’s a tireless worker with a lot of command of the back row. She will be a great addition to the Lakers. Tillman is a 6’2” middle with a lot of athletic upside and a desire to keep getting better. She’s light on her feet and shows good instincts with her blocking and attacks. She could be a real gem for GVSU to have landed.
Ferris State
The GLIAC champions are continuing to rely on in-state talent. For the Class of 2024, the Bulldogs have commitments from outside Alana Deshetsky Alana Deshetsky 5'8" | OH North Branch | 2024 State MI (North Branch) and libero Hope Davies Hope Davies 5'5" | DS/L Forest Hills Eastern | 2024 State MI (Forest Hills Eastern). Deshetsky is the definition of a gamer. She’s willing to take on any role to help her team succeed and she plays with a lot of fire and intensity. She’s got the right attitude to succeed at the next level, but also brings a polished and consistent game to the floor. Davies is a quick defender with a lot of good instincts in the back row. She has a lot of experience against top-level hitters and should be comfortable stepping into the GLIAC by the fall of 2024.
