The Emerald City Classic tournament is back for its 35th year! The University of Washington hosts some of the top volleyball teams from Oregon, Washington, and northern Idaho, and PrepDig was lucky enough to see them in action.
Below are a handful of pin hitters that caught our attention over the course of the first day.
Alefaio-Foifua was leading the charge at last years ECC for NPJ Seattle 16-1, so it was no surprise seeing her do the same this year! She is as speedy as can be, and flies all over the court to keep the ball alive. She is calm, confident, collected, and competitive on the court, from the first point of the game to the last.
Highlights
Azavedo was definitely one of the top liberos in attendance at ECC. Her high level of play on Athena 16-1 was noted early on. Her defensive reads and reactions are next-level. She made lots of electrifying plays to keep her team in rallies. Technically, she was very sound, with a controlled platform, she created good angles on serve receive.
Highlights
Gao is the #3 overall recruit coming out of Washington and the #1 DS/L. So, it is no surprise she was a major impact for the WVBA 16-1 team as their libero. She brought tons of infectious positive, and competitive energy to the floor. On defense, she read the attack with accuracy and positioned herself for a successful dig time and time again.
Johnson was a speedy libero for the NPJ 17-1 team. On defense, she was dynamic and quick. She confidently stepped in to pass ball after ball on serve receive and takes up a lot of the court. Previously trained as a setter, she put up lots of beautiful out-of-system ball to the attackers.
Sophie Lobet

Lobet was exceptional as the libero for SIVBC 16-1. Running a two-libero system, she was the one on the court when we watched the team play. With a super solid platform on serve receive, she created great angles to feed the ball to the setters. She was very vocal and positive on the floor, leading the team rally after rally.
Highlights
Sidhu and the SIVBC 15-1 team played up to 16 Open for ECC. As their primary libero, she was a major factor in their ability to stay in system and compete. She was a digging machine and was absolutely fearless on defense. She was confident on serve receive and took a lot of court.
