Setters are staying with all of the physical talent by bringing a level of volleyball acuity unheard of just ten years ago. Here are five athletes that can run an offense—any offense—and the high schools and clubs that benefit from their talents.
Lexi Shondell Lexi Shondell 5'8" | S McCutcheon | 2026 State IN , 5-8, McCutcheon, Boiler Juniors
Quiet and unassuming, Lexi not only runs the show, she owns it. Her footwork is impeccable, she can get to any errant pass, and always makes a better ball out of a ball first contact. Yes, it helps that her last name is Shondell. She understands how to train, why she does what she does, and how to improve daily. Personally, I haven’t seen any Shondell take plays off just because of who their family is. Lexi is no exception, and I have her as the top setter in this class.
Sophia Gisslen Sophia Gisslen 5'9" | S Carroll | 2026 State IN , 5-9, Carroll, Team Pineapple
From the Fort Wayne area, Sophia is a light-on-her-feet athletic setter that is already accustomed to running a faster than average offense. Most of the time, kids this young are solidifying their own skills and not concerned with tempo for her hitters. Sophia is already playing with a maturity of a setter a year or two older.
Keira Dommer Keira Dommer 5'8" | S Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran | 2026 State IN , 5-10, Concordia Lutheran, Summit
I got a chance to see Keira first-hand at our Stock Up Showcase a few weeks ago. Athletic and smart, Keira always set the right person in the right situation, didn’t force anything and went on offense when she had to. More than capable of holding her own with older players, Miss Dommer has the footwork down, can get to tight passes with ease, and locates the ball well.
Maddie Carnes Maddie Carnes 5'11" | S Springs Valley | 2026 State IN , 5-11, Springs Valley, Union
From super small Springs Valley, Maddie can be a little bit of everything during the high school season, but is definitely a setter for the next level. Quick hands, fast feet and a high volleyball IQ are her calling cards, as with any setter from Union. I’m a fan of her fast athleticism—she never looks hurried, but does everything quickly and with accuracy.
Grace Hargis Grace Hargis 5'8" | S Avon | 2026 State IN , 5-8, Avon, Rev
Grace goes all the way across town to play her club ball, and has improved plenty since the start of last season. She jump sets everything, has high and quick hands, can push the ball from pin to pin and always finds the right ball for the right hitter in any situation. Watching her footwork in transition, she seems almost calm; other setters with her size and age have feet that “dance”. Her’s are smooth and purposeful, which save time, space and energy in the long term.
