Our summary of early stat stuffers from around the Cornhusker State has addressed attackers and setters. Of course, we can’t omit liberos in a state that’s full of defensive talent. Nebraska’s backcourt specialists are already rising to the occasion.
Here are a few with impressive stat ledgers after about a week of play.
There’s a new face leading the way for Gretna’s defense. Zimmerman put us all on notice with her performances with Premier Nebraska this spring. Now, she’s channeling that energy into her big opportunity as Gretna’s libero. Zimmerman has compiled four-and-a-half digs per set and is showing incredible maturity for a starting sophomore.
Highlights
Let’s keep the Gretna connections going with a former Dragon who is fitting in with a new program. Frame joins Papillion-La Vista for her final prep outing and is already piling up stats that are nearly unrivaled. Her five-and-a-half digs per set is a lofty mark for a Class A libero, but Frame has been making these performances a hallmark of her career.
Pokharel seems to have a permanent spot atop Nebraska’s stat leaderboards. The Millard West standout announced her commitment to South Dakota before the season began, and there’s little doubt about Pokharel’s readiness for the big stage. She’s already accumulating five digs per set this year and will keep up that pace against some of the state’s best offenses.
Kucks is making headlines for more than just her defensive prowess with Millard North. The Class of 2025 prospect just committed to Lipscomb while the Bison were in Lincoln to open their 2023 season. Kucks has backed up this big-time pledge with over five digs per set to get credit in early-season matches. These numbers came against elite competition, too.
The two-time defending Class A champs are rallying around a sophomore libero in their vaunted backcourt. Dyrstad will not be intimidated by the spotlight, as she was an integral part of last year’s title run as a freshman. So far, this savvy defender has tallied nearly four digs per set and is looking for more in the coming weeks.
How about another impact transfer for your radar? Meyer has migrated to Lincoln East this year, where her experience in big matches is paying off right away. She has averaged about five digs per set against formidable offenses and is clearly finding her stride with the Spartans. This Pitt commit is primed for the Class A gauntlet.
Let’s check in on one of our favorite liberos from out west. Benson is no stranger to putting up staggering dig numbers for Hastings. How about nine digs per set in the first six sets of the season? This astonishing mark is just a sample of the impact that Benson has had throughout her prep career.
Here’s a small-town star having a huge year on a variety of stages. Ashby dazzled is during the club season with her lockdown defense in the Nebraska Juniors gym. She’s been a star at Prep Dig Showcase events, too. Now, the Aurora junior is back on the prep scene and has accumulated six digs per set in the first handful of matches.
We’ll wrap up this feature with one of Lincoln’s most seasoned defenders. Cogan has been a prominent contributor with Lincoln Southeast for a long time. Her reign in the LSE backcourt continues with four digs per set against some elite early-season foes.
