Here’s a look at some players that shined during Tuesday’s quarterfinal match:
Derrer casts a large shadow on her opponents. The 6-foot-4 sophomore produces as a two-way standout at the net. Her best work comes in the middle but she’s quick and agile enough to move along the front. She can block from anywhere and shows a hammer when hitting. I saw her play a lot during the last club season and was impressed. She was considerably better in this viewing. I think this kid has an incredibly high ceiling.
Highlights
Schubert has grown as a volleyball player during the last year and has a knack for impacting matches from all around the court. She pumped out 31 assists in this match to go with 11 digs. She understands her position and those around her. Schubert is a fundamentally sound player. Her best trait might her consistency. She makes very few errors and her hitters know where her sets are going to be – where they like them.
Highlights
Johnson is one of my favorite players to watch. She’s just so sound at every spot on the floor and excels in most of them. She hits with a hammer on the outside and her back-row middle hit is very effective. Johnson shows a high level of athleticism with an impressive vertical leap and hang time. She moves well laterally with good instincts and vision of the court. She pounded out a match-high 16 kills in this three-setter with five digs. Johnson has committed the University of Missouri St. Louis.
I’m hearing Dorsey is going to turn more focus to soccer, her favorite sport. That would be a shame for our sport, as the junior is a really talented volleyball player. She doesn’t really have one stand-out trait, but she’s rock solid as an all-around performer. She produced a match-best 13 digs in this contest and also chipped in with six kills, illustrating her versatility. She’s a high-end athlete with quick feet and reflexes.
Kathryn Snyder
Kathryn Snyder
We’re always looking for the next stars during the season. I may have found one in Snyder. Assumption is a program that reloads, and with some of its veterans exhausting their eligibility this fall, she should step into a more prominent role next season. She’s already shining, though. She contributed seven digs, four kills, a pair of blocking assists and a service ace in this contest. She’s athletic with fluid movements and instincts on the court. I’m interested in seeing more of Snyder in this tournament and beyond.
Hardersen shines as a strong all-around setter with a broad skill set. She shows soft hands, good decision making and accuracy when setting. She shares a strong connection with her hitters and knows where they like the ball. She holds up very well in the back row and is a two-way factor at the net. There really is very little Hardersen can’t do. In a short three-setter here, she accumulated 12 assists, 12 digs and six kills.
Highlights
Lombardi, a Fresno State pledge, finished up her prep career as one of the top players in school history. The senior showed in her brief stay here that she’s one of the better all-around performers in the state. She cranked out a team-high 12 kills to go with 10 assists and six digs. At 6-1, Lombardi moves effortlessly around the court and displays a lot of athleticism. She benefits from long arms, good leaping ability and hang time, and a killer swing.
