In fact, it exceeded our expectations. With 4 of the 5 State Championship matches going into 5 sets, we saw some brilliant performances over the 3-day tournament. Some athletes were complete surprises and some have been on our radar for a long time. Here are some stars of the WIAA state tournament.
Justman made sure that the 3rd time was the charm for the Wolves. Whe brings a fighter’s mentality and she is not afraid to take the big swing. Justman is physical and athletic and her talents and hard work will be taking her to UW-Green Bay next fall to compete in the Horizon League. She simply knows how to control the match whether it’s by throwing the ball deep cross corner and pounding the line. Justman made the most of her matches at the Resch this year and tallied 69 kills and 8 blocks in her 10 sets of play.
Kaydon Lamon
Kaydon Lamon
Lamon is only a Junior and has been operating under the radar. She is strong, athletic, 5’11, and a lefty. Lamon swings with authority and works the deep corners with expertise. She was so impressive in the Lightning’s Quarterfinal against Franklin on Thursday. Lamon took 8 swings and 6 were kills. More impressive, she had no errors. She also added 6 blocks against some of the top attackers in the state.
Jaelyn Stowe
Jaelyn Stowe
Stowe recorded over 100 assists this past weekend as Wonewoc-Center played 10 sets to win the Division 4 State Championship. In their semi-final match she was instrumental as a scoring option as well as the distributor. Stowe recorded 4 aces, 31 digs,k and 4 blocks on the weekend as well. She moved the ball around and came up with some really sneaky setter dumps at just the right time to keep the opposing defense focused on her. This created some great match-ups for the likes of Kelsey Justman Kelsey Justman 5’9″ | OH Wonewoc-Center | 2024 State WI and Bryn Ertel to record double digit kills in each of their matches.
Britta Olson
Britta Olson
Olson was a freshman phenom this weekend. Unknown to us but now definitely on our radar as she helped the Saints earn a Division 3 State Championship. Olson was 100% fire from the service line this weekend and took them on crucial runs in during their matches. She totaled 13 aces in 9 sets of play and against some of the best passing in division 2.
Estanna Graewin
Estanna Graewin
It’s not too often you see a team play 2 nail biting 5 set matches at the State Tournament but Wonewoc-Center wanted to give the fans their money’s worth this weekend. In 10 sets and who knows how many serve receive attempts Graewin only had 5 errors. On the defensive side she amassed 60 digs and was a cornerstone for the Wolves scrappy defense. Another player exploding on the biggest stage.
Lilly Cesarz
Lilly Cesarz
Cesarz was a classic and crucial role player for DSHA in their run for a 2nd straight Division 1 Title. She adapted and worked hard in transition to get up quickly for the attack. Cesarz was also a brick wall when she partnered up with Sophia Wendlick Sophia Wendlick 6’0″ | OH DSHA | 2024 State #100 Nation WI . Most impressive was her 9 blocks in the Championship match against a truly formidable attacking squad. She hit an efficient .500 in their quarterfinal against River Falls and a .333 in their semifinal against Hamilton.
