The 15U group finished third at the Sunshine Volleyball Classic in Orlando, with a narrow three-set loss to eventual champion – Arizona Storm – being all that kept it from a finals appearance.
Legacy went 8-2 on the weekend and only dropped five sets through the 10 matches. Of those five sets, four came by four points or less.
Perhaps the most impressive win was in their final match, the consolation match.
After dropping the opening set to OTVA Volleyball 25-14, Legacy got it together and won the next two sets 25-18, 15-13 to claim the third-place finish.
Legacy had a lot of great performances in Orlando, but here are four players that really shined.
Cynthia Ockerman Cynthia Ockerman 6'3" | MB Brighton | 2027 State MI , 6’2” MH Brighton
Ockerman continued her great club season by putting down 58 kills on the weekend while hitting .505 for Legacy. Ockerman’s high finishing rate has been par for the course in 2024 and she is hitting .400 on the season. What makes that even more impressive is Ockerman has been going up against the best middles in the country while performing at this rate. She’s got the knack for finishing points and has also been a big defensive asset with her length.
Sophia Smith Sophia Smith 6'2" | RS Marian | 2027 State MI , 6’0” RS Marian
Smith had some ups and downs in the fall with playing at a high level during the prep season, but those experiences have led to some strong outings during the club season. Smith had a big weekend in Florida, putting down 32 kills while hitting .376. On top of her hitting, Smith came up with a lot of timely blocks, including key back-to-back blocks during gold pool play on Sunday. This club season, Smith has shown she can terminate from either pin and has established herself as one of the stronger blockers in the class.
Marlie Smith Marlie Smith 5'10" | S Clarkston | 2027 State MI , 5’10” S Clarkston
Smith continued to run the Legacy offense as a well-oiler machine. She put together 200 assists on the weekend and displayed her elite-level court IQ. Along with her awareness of where to get the ball, Smith has great decision-making when it comes to calling her own number. She hit .400 on the weekend, picking up a handful of kills in each match. Smith’s skillset and leadership ability have been a driving force for this Legacy squad all season.
Makayla Naves Makayla Naves 5'7" | DS/L Grand Blanc | 2027 State MI , 5’7” DS Grand Blanc
Naves was a big unsung hero for Legacy this weekend with her passing and serving. She passed a 2.3 while racking up 15 aces. Even without the aces, Naves’ serves regularly kept opponents off-balanced and out-of-system. Legacy has two elite defenders in the back row between Naves and libero Addison Stepp Addison Stepp 5'8" | DS/L South Lyon East | 2027 MI . Their efforts have gone a long way in allowing the offensive players to rack up the numbers they have in 2024.
