This week, the destination of many teams will be Kansas City, Missouri, where the first of two weekends of the traditional ASICS Show Me Qualifier will take place from Friday to Sunday – 731 teams are entered to compete in the ten divisions in the 15s, 16s and 17s age group.
Texas teams will, of course, also make the trip North to fight for their spots and, as we’ve been doing with every major Qualifier, we’ll highlight some of the top prospects of the Lone Star State that will be on the court over the weekend. These right sides have some serious scoring potential:
Holmes is the right side hitter of the Dallas Skyline 15 Royal team that will compete in the 15 Open division. A six-footer, she has great length and uses it extremely well on offense, expanding her range by making contact with the ball at a very high point. Holmes has a good mix of power and skills and that gives her the ability to hit a wide variety of shots every time she goes up to swing. She’s also very intelligent with her decision-making and often picks the right option, scoring at a good rate when out-of-system and rarely making errors.
Highlights
Daisy Voskuhl
Daisy Voskuhl
Voskuhl and her Texas One – 16 Royal team will be among the ones competing in the 16 USA division in Kansas City. She’s very tall and physical and is one of those players who can carry a huge offensive load for their teams. Voskuhl uses her physical tools very well, but has become more and more consistent and reliable over the last months, mixing things up offensively and limiting her errors. She has tremendous offensive potential and doesn’t shy away from the big moments. Voskuhl also impacts matches with her big blocking.
Hickman will be one of the main scoring options in her HJV 16 Elite team that will fight in the 16 Open division. She emerged as one of the top right side hitters during the last club season and has continued to develop her game over the last months. Her 6’5″ frame is one of Hickman’s main assets, but she has been able to add power and several shots into her game. A lefty, she benefits from her high contact point and is very smart with her shot selection, scoring in a variety of ways and making very few errors. Hickman is also a big and technical blocker and can make defensive plays that depend on her mobility.
Gaido and her Austin Skyline 17 Royal team will be in action in the 17 Open division this weekend. A towering right side hitter, she’s been considered one of the top players in her age group in Texas for quite some years now and her performances over the period have just confirmed that. Because of her size and skills, she can be unstoppable when in system, making contact with the ball at a very high point and hitting angles one would expect from a shorter player. She can hit different tempos on the right and is also steady and reliable on the left. Gaido’s blocking is also a major factor as she can be a real challenge to opposing pin hitters when well-positioned to make stops.
Texas Tornados 17 Adidas will have Porath on the right when they appear in the 17 USA division in Kansas City. A lefty with long arms and great vision, she finds ways to score against anyone, combining a quick left arm and a great understanding of when to hit around the block, tool it, or tip the ball over it. Porath is very precise when she hits around the block and can bring some heat when in system. She embraced the responsibility of being the team’s main scoring option and works well under pressure. The right side hitter also times her blocking well and gets stops and wins 50-50 duels at the net with some frequency,
