The greatest feeling as a scout is when you get completely blindsided by an athlete or team.

That feeling came over me on June 12 while scouting the Wichita North RedHawks at a summer tournament at Butler Community College.

I watched North's pool play match against Remington and was completely caught off guard by their level of play.

Here is the first of three reports from varsity summer action from the Power Plant in El Dorado. It features six prospects on the North roster.

[player_tooltip player_id='493491' first='Tori' last='Buss'], 5'10”, OH, ‘25

Buss is a rock-star prospect. She is currently ranked No. 107 overall by Prep Dig in the Kansas Class of 2025. After watching her play in person for the first time, I can admit that she is severely under-ranked and will move into the Top 50 when rankings are updated this summer. The Redhawk outside can jump out of the gym and hits with authority and accuracy. She had a team-high six kills against Remington. I was most impressed with how she controls her body in the air and is willing to play six rotations or her squad. She has a solid serve and had multiple aces in the match. Buss finished her junior season with a team-high 210 kills in 74 sets. Her ceiling is as a small conference Division I prospect and a sure-fire Division II prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id='551296' first='Andrea' last='Hernandez'], 6'0”, MB, ‘25

Hernandez plays with fire and her belly and I have bestowed a new moniker for the powerful hitter. She hits the ball hard and should make a T-Shirt emblazoned with La Trituradora (The Crusher). She has a big reach and jumps well. She had four kills in the match against Remington. She is currently an unranked athlete but will be added later this summer. Hernandez finished with 118 kills and 26 total blocks during her junior campaign. I am not sure she understands how good she can be, like many Kansas prospects she would benefit, by adding more upper-body strength, to help her finish blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='495681' first='Cora' last='Daggett'], 6'2”, MB/RS, ‘25

Dagget might be the best combination of size and strength I have seen in Kansas since scouting Sterling's 6-foot-4 prospect [player_tooltip player_id='173377' first='Lily' last='Gray']. Daggett is quicker and more flexible than Gray and moves as well as any of the other ranked Six-Footers in the class of 2025. She can punish a ball. Daggett finished her junior season with 209 kills and 26 total blocks. She is also an elite swimming prospect for college coaches looking to add to their rosters.

Ytzel Grajeda-Del Rio, 5'1”, DS/L, ‘25

Del Rio is a barrel of spunkiness. She might be the quickest athlete on the RedHawks roster. She made consistent first passes and plays with a ton of energy. She did not hesitate when asked if she was willing to play for a junior college program, which was an unusually fresh response. She finished with 329 serve receptions and 136 digs as a junior. She also has a surprisingly hard serve for such a small-framed athlete. She collected 26 aces last season for North.

[player_tooltip player_id='551333' first='Ryan' last='Daggett'], 6'0”, MB, “27

The younger of the two Daggett sisters is also a middle hitter. She is not as tall as her older sister but jumps higher. She is also a couple of ticks quicker than her sister. Daggett has a solid tip game and sees holes in the opponent's defense. She collected 63 kills in 23 sets of varsity action as a freshman. I anticipate her game will continue to evolve and improve.

[player_tooltip player_id='551335' first='Addison' last='Rentana'], 5'7”, OH/DS, ‘27

Rentana caught my eye with her serving skills. She might be the rawest prospect in this group, but her game might be the best well-rounded. She could easily play six rotations for this North if needed. The RedHawks have a ton of depth up front so she might be highlighted more on the back row. Her kick drip was on full display as she had the second coolest pair of sneakers I saw during the weekend. Keep an eye on this youngster and look for her to join the 2027 rankings along with the younger Daggett.
