Scouting Reports, Photos: Iowa City Liberty 2024

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Iowa City Liberty is earning a reputation as a program willing to take on all challengers. A perusal through the Lighting schedule reveals one of the toughest slates in the state.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Liberty showed potential at August's Prep Dig Sizzle in Coralville. It appeared that last year's grueling schedule for an inexperienced team coming off a state championship would pay dividends this season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It has to an extent in 2024, but the real test will arrive in the regionals. If the seeds hold, the Lightning will get another shot at MVC foe Cedar Falls in the final with a state tournament berth on the line. She is simply one of the best all-around performers in Iowa. Hildebrand can do it all on the court. She leads these Lightning in kills (271), is second in assists (269), digs (231) and blocks (39.0). Hildebrand set as a sophomore on the state championship team two years ago, and that's her role on the next level. Her 502 digs already have her over 1,000 for her young prep career. She's cat-quick with an outstanding feel for the game. Miller reads the play as it's unfolding and puts herself in the proper places to deliver. She's improved her ability to turn fast pace around into precise, usable passes. It's crazy to think, but she has plenty of room to raise her game even more. She's a bulldog competitor like her sister, channeling that emotion into production. Hadley really has improved all aspects of her game during the last year. She's built on the skills that make her a standout at setting up teammates. Miller has become a much more reliable hitter this season, impacting matches in that area. She leads the Lightning with 332 assists, and has added 89 kills and 181 digs. She's improved her swing on the outside but has seen the most improvement with her play in the back row. It keeps Wilson on the court through six rotations, where she contributes all around court. She ranks third on the squad with (99 kills) and digs (215 digs), and her 20.0 blocks are fifth. She fits well on this year's team with her versatility and ability to attack from the pin. Maassen ranks second among Lightning players in kills with 144, and has added 105 digs and 18.0 blocks. She looks more comfortable playing away from the outside. She's tied for the team lead with 57.0 blocks, and she's chipped in 88 kills and 55 digs. More agility and court comfortability have aided her the most in becoming more consistent. Van Heukelom's continued development is worth keeping an eye on.
