The Mustangs finished second to Class 5A power Pleasant Valley in the round-robin event with a 3-1 mark. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A favorite to win the Class 3A state title this season, Mount Vernon hung with the mighty Spartans before coming up short. Meester has stood out among her peers for years. To her credit, she's worked hard in developing her skills to complement a lot of natural ability. The power in her swing has continued increasing to the point now where if she gets a clean look, it's goodnight. Coveted by the country's top college programs, Meester settled on perennial power Louisville. The powerful left-hander is the state's top right-side hitter. Maue is an explosive athlete with tremendous leaping ability and hang time. She complements those traits with being a technically sound hitter. She's a super-skilled setter. Huber puts the ball on the money from wherever she receives the pass and mixes up her deliveries after diagnosing the opponent's defense. The athleticism needed in hoops translates well to her second sport. Lateral quickness and jumping ability help her defend all around the court. And undersized middle, she makes up for it with a big vertical leap and sharp timing defensively. She's played a lot of volleyball, and it shows as she maximizes her talents. Where Whitaker stands out as the stronger defensive player among the two teammates, Schurbon is ultra-efficient with her attack. Sophia has improved a great deal during the last year. From her freshman season to club ball to this fall, all parts of her game as grown. She's comfortable attacking and defending at either pin. Her swing has steadily become more consistent and powerful. She does a good job reading the attack and getting into passing position.
