The fall leaves in the Great Lakes are super beautiful, and I have seen lots of quality hockey.

Today, I will try to catch up a little and preview sub-state action this Saturday. Although I won't return to Kansas in time Saturday to catch sub-state action, I knew our readers would be interested.

I also plan to preview the State Tournaments next week to close the month.

My current plan is to cover the first day of the Class 6A and 5A tournaments in Salina, and then the second day of Class 4A and 3A tournaments in Hutchinson on November 1-2.

Here is a preview of the Class 6A Western Sub State.

Here is a look at the brackets for each of the four Sub State tournaments and one prospect to watch from each grouping.

Sub State One: Washburn Rural (Host), Liberal, Topeka, Free State

[player_tooltip player_id='445556' first='Tessa' last='Nover-Estes'], 6'0”, S, Free State, ‘27 (Pictured Above)

Free State will be a dark horse in this Sub State bracket, but the Firebirds have an outstanding setter to watch and the top two seeds in this region do not share stats on Max Preps. Nover-Estes is ranked No. 20 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027. She has dished out 693 assists this season and has reached the 1,000 career assist mark in just two seasons. The Firebirds (13-17) are the No. 9 seed in the West and open Sub State action against No. 8 seed Topeka High (17-18). The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 1 Seed Washburn Rural (28-6) and No. 16 Seed Liberal (4-29).

Sub State Two: Wichita North (Host), Campus, Maize, Wichita Southeast

[player_tooltip player_id='551331' first='Ellie' last='Wisdom'], 5'9”, S/RS, Maize, ‘27

Wisdom has been putting in yeoman's work for the Maize Eagles after her older sister [player_tooltip player_id='493574' first='Zoe' last='Wisdom'] suffered a knee injury early in the season. Ellie has recorded 503 assists, 221 digs, and 121 kills in 84 sets played. Wisdom is currently ranked No. 22 overall in the Class of 2027. Maize owns a record of (17-18) and is the No. 7 Seed out west. The Eagles open Sub State play against No. 10 Seed Wichita Southeast (12-24). The winner of the match will face the winner of the host and No. 2 seeded Wichita North (28-8) and Campus (9-24).

Sub State Three: Wichita Northwest (Host), Wichita East, Manhattan, Derby

[player_tooltip player_id='222564' first='Brooklyn' last='Benoit'], 6'0”, OH, Wichita Northwest, ‘26

Benoit is currently ranked No. 13 overall by Prep Dig. She leads the Grizzlies in kills with 300 in 76 sets played. I meant to watch Northwest earlier in the season but missed them due to a schedule change at a tournament. Northwest is the No. 3 seed in the west and has a record of (22-13). They will host a Sub State and open against No. 14 See Wichita East (9-24). The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 6 Seed Manhattan (18-15) and No. 11 Seed Derby (11-23).

Sub State Four: Garden City (Host), Wichita Heights, Dodge City, Junction City

[player_tooltip player_id='173378' first='Piper' last='Harris'], 5'10”, OH, Garden City, ‘25

Garden City's game is spicier than a Buffalo Chicken Wing. Harris leads the Buffaloes in kills with 309 in 85 sets played. Garden City (20-14) is the No. 4 Seed and will host No. 13 Seed Wichita Heights (9-24) to open the postseason. The winner will face the winner of Dodge City (17-14) and Junction City (9-21). I know I should not play favorites, but I hope that the Harris and Buffaloes punch a ticket to Salina, as I want to see Harris compete against some of the best talent in Kansas.
