Big City Luau - Day 2 Standouts

Day two of the Luau was impressive. There were so many good teams playing. I tried to get out to as many facilities as I could. The following are a few of the studs from Day 2 that were pivotal in helping their teams battle through bracket play to the end. Her serve receive was solid for such a young player. She moves her feet and creates good angles to deliver optimal passes for her setter. She also covers very well. She has a good read on the ball and has a quick first step which aides in her ability to pick up many tips and pushes.     VanLuik impressives every time I see her play. She has the heart and drive for this sport and goes all out on the court. This weekend was no different. As an outside, VanLuik uses a variety of shots in order to rack up a number of kills for her team. She is exceptionally good when in system but this weekend her out of system hitting really stood out. She transitions well, has good timing, and delivers power behind those shots also making her hard to defend in just about every situation on the court.     Kottke is a 6 rotation outside hitter that had a great performance leading her team through the bracket play on Sunday. She is deliberate in her movements, transitions well, and take high quality swings. She scored many points on her smart shot selection varying them between cross, line, and also off of the opposing blockers hands. Kottke is also a great server. Teams had a hard time handling her serve which caused her to rack up further points for her team.     Schaldach is a fearless attacker. While she may not be the tallest outside, she certainly doesn't play like it. She used a combination of her vertical, power, and grit to deliver countless kills and helped rack up the wins for her team at the Luau. While her fearlessness is a great asset to have, she also delivers in other ways for her team. She was also solid in serve receive, serving, and defense.     Boisvert did a good job running the offense for her team at the Luau. She is a strong setter with good court vision. She moves quickly, was able to find her middles in transition, and push the ball to the pins. I was especially impressed with her reversals. She was able to isolate her right side several times to generate kills for her team.     ONeil is an impressive, scrappy libero. She was all over the court and made several, one handed saves. This was due mainly to her quickness but also her great reading skills. She picked up everything - dumps, tips, balls coming off the block, etc. In addition, just about every free ball that came across the net was handled by her, regardless of where it was going. ONeil is definitely going to be one to keep tabs on as her volleyball career continues.     Ray is a powerful attacker from everywhere on the court…and I mean everywhere. She can generate kills from the pins and middle with ease, however, she is equally impressive when she comes flying out of the middle back. She makes her setters look good as she can make whatever set they give her work due to her quickness, ability to adjust, and good footwork.
