We've had quite an introduction to the Class of 2028.

Our Nebraska 2028 watch list has a long way to go. This initial release primarily gleaned insight from the 2024 high school season, where a select few freshmen entered the Nebraska prep scene. This year's club season has already taught us a lot, and we're ready to share some of those observations here.

Several Class of 2028 athletes have made big early impressions through the first several weeks of this year's campaign. Some are already on our watch list, while others are waiting to make their debut. We're addressing players from both sides of that spectrum in our newest feature series.

Backemeyer carries the setter-opposite niche that has worked wonders on many other Nebraska Juniors squads. The Elmwood-Murdock freshman exhibits great hands as a backcourt setter, but teams also have to deal with Backemeyer's quick right arm as a front-row opposite. This long list of responsibilities might be daunting at the 15s level, but Backemeyer can handle it all.

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] is quickly flexing its depth in the 15s age group. Kimbrough has been tearing up the regional scene with [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 15 Black, a roster loaded with under-the-radar athletes from around the Star City area. 15 Black frequently looks to Kimbrough to put away tough swings, and this Seward native can oblige. She has a wicked crosscourt shot that does most of the scoring, but Kimbrough can also keep defenses off-balance by turning down the line. February results revealed a serious upward trend among [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s youngest standouts.

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold's setters could be considered unsung heroes of the early-season stretch. Wellensiek has managed to run a steady, consistent offense no matter which frontcourt weapons 15 Gold deploys. This Johnson County Central standout can spread the ball from pin to pin and can also be a frontcourt force when needed. Wellensiek and her team are prepared to take on Open-level challenges with high-level qualifiers on the horizon.

We're always eager to see the next wave of talent in the [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] gym. 15 Navy has plenty of firepower along the net, and Bumgardner is an ever-present member of that group. She elevates well out of the middle and has incorporated a wide array of shots into her arsenal. Bumgardner is also one of 15 Navy's most physical blockers, so she can slot into either the M1 or the M2 position. Either way, this emerging freshman will find success.

Why not lean into the [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] pipeline a little further? We've run into 15 Navy several times on the regional stage, and Tresemer has been a frequent impact player at the outside hitter spot. She's sees the block well and is not afraid to tool well-formed hands in front of her. Moreover, Tresemer is a weapon along the end line who can influence matches with her serving or passing. This well-rounded game is a staple of [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] triumphs.

Brisson landed on our radar after appearing on last year's Prep Dig Circuit. Now, she's lighting up scoreboards with Nebraska Elite's top 15s group. This dynamic athlete has ample experience on both pins and brings serious heat with her explosive approach. Brisson is a worthy out-of-system outlet who can easily neutralize opposing blocks. We've also seen this pin hitter compile some excellent backcourt reps at our showcases, so her six-rotation development is worth following this year.

Gutz immediately entered the varsity fray with Lincoln East and didn't take long to find a rhythm in the Spartan backcourt. That breakthrough set a high bar for the 2025 calendar year, but Gutz is still thriving with [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 15 Black. She recently compiled an impressive highlight tape from the ASICS President's Day Classic, which revealed Gutz's relentless pursuit and uncanny defensive instincts. Her command of the left-back area should propel [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] back into the national conversation this spring.
