The Maize South Mavericks suffered just their third loss of the season in a high-quality match against Bishop Carroll in their first match of the Seaman Invitational.

It's not often I get to see two teams from Wichita meet each other in Northeast Kansas. It would have been a treat just watching the two play, but they gave me a triple-scoop sundae treat of a match.

The Mavericks won the first set, but then lost two sets in a row, in a back-and-forth match against the Golden Eagles.

Maize South met the Golden Eagles in the championship game of the tournament and knocked off Bishop Carroll in that rematch to earn the tournament title.

Here is a look at four athletes from Maize South who played well in the Mavericks' opening match of the tournament.

[player_tooltip player_id='828131' first='Addison' last='Davee'], 6'4”, MB, Maize South, '27

Davee is an athlete I have talked with multiple times and have shared my thoughts and expectations with. This match was the most dominant one I have seen her have in person. She registered nine kills and three blocks in the loss. She continues to work on improving her strength and quickness. She has a long swing, and when she gets on top of the ball, she is almost unreturnable. She is ranked No. 25 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027. I think Division I programs would be foolish not to give her a look. The natural ability is there, and you can't make athletes taller.

[player_tooltip player_id='570416' first='Autumn' last='Popp'], 5'10”, S, Maize South, '27

Popp is ranked No. 6 overall and is verbally committed to Wichita State University. This was the second match in which she was just super impressive. She dished out 21 assists and recorded two digs. The overall numbers weren't as high as when I saw her earlier in the season, but she runs an offense like top setters should. She will play a huge role in the postseason success of the Mavericks, and the Shockers will be adding a solid talent to their roster.

[player_tooltip player_id='532772' first='Sage' last='Illian'], 6'1”, OH/S, Maize South, ‘28

Illian is currently ranked No. 12 overall by Prep Dig Kansas. She is a graceful hitter who also played six rotations for Maize South. Her stat line in a match against Olathe South earlier this season included six kills, four digs, and three serve receptions. Against St. James, earlier this season, she registered eight kills, 10 digs, and five serve receptions. Yesterday against Bishop Carroll, she tallied 11 kills, 14 serve receptions, and seven digs in the three-set loss. She has a “can-do" attitude, and the skills to play college volleyball at an elite level.

[player_tooltip player_id='580722' first='Kendyll' last='Nash'], 5'5”, DS/L, Maize South, ‘27 (Pictured Above)

This was the second time this season that I was impressed with the defensive skills of Nash. She is ranked No. 86 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027. She finished the match with 17 digs, 13 serve receptions, one assist, and one ace. She had a couple of flat hand “pancake digs” that were mind-blowing. She plays with high energy and will be a player to continue to follow.
