The second match I scouted in Meriden was a two-set victory by Nemaha Central over the St. Marys Bears 25-7, 25-13.

The Thunder started multiple underclassmen and showed off their quickness and hitting prowess.

Here is a look at the four stars of the game from the Thunder's victory.

[player_tooltip player_id='446331' first='Ali' last='Jo Henry'], 5'9”, OH, Nemaha Central, '27

Henry provides the veteran presence for the Thunder. She is a six-rotation player that I have watched evolve as an athlete. She has a ton of varsity experience and will be the emotional rock for this squad. She is ranked No. 26 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027. She finished the match with two kills, two digs, two serve receptions, and two aces. Her short serve was dialed in during the match. It's a line-hard drive short serve that is tough to return.

[player_tooltip player_id='883035' first='Grace' last='Hammes'], 5'5”, DS/L, Nemaha Central, '27

Hammes was impressive against St. Marys. She plays with extreme intensity and with the “Eye Of The Tiger.” She racked up a team-high eight serve receptions and made consistent first passes in the win. She is currently an unranked athlete, but look for that to change before the season is over.

[player_tooltip player_id='883036' first='Meg' last='Honeyman'], 5'6”, OH, Nemaha Central, '28

So there were two standout performances from sophomores who are new names for me. Honeyman is a familiar name, at least, as she had an older sister who played for Nemaha Central. She was tied for the team-high in kills with six against the Bears. She is a versatile athlete who can play middle or outside moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='883037' first='Macy' last='Holthaus'], 5'6”, OH, Nemaha Central, ‘28

With Honeyman bringing the Thunder, it was Holthaus who brought the Lightning. She also finished with six kills. She also recorded two aces and one block for Nemaha Central. Like Honeyman she is currently unranked, but will for certain be added during the October rankings update. I will be watching the overall numbers for these two lanky athletes closely as the season progresses.
