Abilene felt like the Wild West of old on September 9, but not for the reasons you would think.

On my drive to Abilene, I spotted cattle, buffalo, horses, and wild turkeys.

Luckily, I got home before the deer were wandering along I-70.

A couple of Grizzly Bears, wolves, and rattlesnakes, and I would have felt like I was in a Western.

I headed to Abilene on September 9 to scout a match between the Cowgirls and the Wamego Red Raiders. The Cowgirls were unable to circle the wagons, dropping two sets to their league rivals.

Abilene is not a tall team, but they have a trio of athletic juniors who impressed me during the match.

All four of these athletes are currently unranked, but I have made Prep Dig Profiles for each one.

Athletes are encouraged to claim their free profiles by using the link below.

[player_tooltip player_id='884829' first='Annie' last='Waite'], 5'4”, DS/OH, Abilene, ‘27

The most impressive talent on the court for me on Tuesday night was Abilene's Waite. She is cougar quick and jumps like a jackrabbit. She recorded six kills, 11 digs, 12 serve receptions, one block, and one ace in the contest. She has a really nice vertical and a long reach for her size. I liked her defensive skills, but she is too good a jumper to wear the libero jersey. If I were a JUCO or NAIA coach, I would quickly follow her game.

[player_tooltip player_id='795042' first='Josie' last='Keener'], 5'4”, DS/L, Abilene, ‘28

Keener's defensive skills impressed me during the match. She is as flexible as Gumby and picks shoe-lace low balls off the court. She is arguably the smoothest passer I have seen so far this season. She has a high ceiling as a libero at the college level. She recorded five digs and six serve receptions. Wamego avoided serving to her as often as possible.

[player_tooltip player_id='884830' first='Lola' last='Rock'], 5'7”, OH, Abilene, ‘27

With a name like [player_tooltip player_id='884830' first='Lola' last='Rock'], I can't get my favorite Eric Clapton and Creedence Clearwater songs out of my head. She is a physical athlete who moves well. She played six rotations for Abilene. She finished the match with four kills, four digs, and seven serve receptions.

[player_tooltip player_id='843690' first='Makenna' last='Stover'], 5'9”, OH, Abilene, ‘26

Stover is the fourth unranked prospect that caught my eye on Abilene's roster. She was tied for the team lead in kills in the loss with four. She has a smooth approach and plays with high intensity. With the loss Abilene is now 2-2 on the season.
