On most fall drives through the Flint Hills, I would normally listen to Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash, but during today's road trip Blondie and ABBA were my jams.

I headed to Abilene on September 9 to scout a match between the Cowgirls and the Wamego Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders defeated their league rivals in two sets, 25-19, 25-18.

Here is a report on five athletes who stood out in the win for Wamego.

[player_tooltip player_id='554328' first='Ryann' last='Langvardt'], 6'0”, MB/OH, Wamego, '26

It had been a hot minute since I last saw Langvardt for play, and she did not disappoint me. She posted solid numbers in the win and was by far the most physical athlete at the net for either team. She is ranked No. 37 overall in the Kansas Class of 2026. She recorded a match-high 10 kills in the victory. She added seven serve receptions, four digs, one block, and one ace for Wamego. She made the Abilene pay for a couple of overpasses with quick slams.

[player_tooltip player_id='834747' first='Lexi' last='Hecht'], 5'8”, OH, Wamego, '26

Hecht had another quality hitting performance for the Red Raiders. She registered eight kills, five digs, four serve receptions and one ace. Hecht is verbally committed to playing basketball for Nebraska-Kearney after graduation. I swear she can hang in the air like Michael Jordan back in his day. She has excellent court vision and likes to eat up the opponents, with dips, dunks, tips, and by pushing the ball to deep corners.

[player_tooltip player_id='704339' first='Kendall' last='Mayer'], 5'10”, MB/OH, Wamego, '28

Mayer is ranked No. 75 overall in the Kansas Class of 2028. I was impressed with her physicality at the net. She has an accurate serve, but it has very little heat on it. She finished the match with two kills, two digs, one block, and one ace.

[player_tooltip player_id='883486' first='Leah' last='Winter'], 5'7”, S, Wamego, ‘28

Two athletes shared the setting duties for the Red Raiders. Winter is the longer of the two Wamego setters. She finished the match with 10 assists, one kill, one dig, and one serve reception. She played a composed match.

[player_tooltip player_id='884831' first='Marie' last='McVay'], 5'4”, S, Wamego, ‘28

McVay shared the setting duties with Winter. She is quicker than Winter, but not as tall. She finished with 11 assists in the win. She also recorded four digs. I think she is a better defensive option than Winter, but Winter can be more of a threat as a blocker. One thing is for sure, Wamego has two quality setting options moving forward. With the win, Wamego improved its record to 4-4 on the season.
