We're almost there.

For every class except Class A, Saturday marks the final obstacle to a state tournament berth. We've had a season full of surprise contenders, monumental upsets, and emerging stars. Our Saturday slate could be a microcosm of the fall campaign, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

Let's set the stage. Here's our quick "around-the-world" look at Nebraska's last hurrah before the state tournament.

New Format, Familiar Names

Class B joined Class A in the district-only format this year, but Class B's brackets still fall at the same time as their C1 through D2 counterparts. Even with all this postseason newness, the district final round has many of the big contenders we'd expect.

All but one of Class B's district final hosts reached Saturday's finale via a semifinal sweep. That includes teams like Norris, Elkhorn North, Waverly, Omaha Skutt Catholic, and all the other Class B frontrunners that have been exchanging haymakers throughout the 2025 season. Class B hosts will be heavy favorites this weekend.

Keep an eye on B-7. Gering hosts Bennington in a clash between teams that could both reach the tournament field by the end of the day. We'll see if we really get those chalk results.

Breaking the Drought

Several district finals competitors are looking to punch their state tournament ticket for the first time in a while.

Even the top seeds in this year's race are not exempt from postseason droughts. Class C1 No. 1 Ogallala has not been to State since 2016, making this year's breakout campaign even more impressive. A district showdown with Battle Creek awaits.

Top-ranked and undefeated Johnson County Central only has a 2008 tournament berth on its historical ledger. Needless to say, the Thunderbirds are enjoying their best season in program history and have one more obstacle against Elmwood-Murdock to reach next week's dance.

Let's go further down the line. How about Class D1 No. 4 Morrill, hosting for a chance to swipe its first tournament trip since 1987? Back then, we had sideout scoring and best-of-three contests. Things have changed, and Morrill has a big opportunity against a stacked Cross County lineup.

Scary Underdogs

Okay, Halloween has come and gone. We can still embrace the spirit of spooky season with a few frightening lower seeds. Nebraska gives us plenty of teams to choose from here, so buckle up.

Oakland-Craig has been a mainstay at recent state tournaments.

We might as well start in Class C1 and work our way down. Don't sleep on the No. 10 and No. 11 seeds with Malcolm and Ashland-Greenwood occupying those dangerous spots. Malcolm wields veteran scorers who have been on the state tournament stage before, while Ashland-Greenwood's ball control has kept it in some monumental contests.

Class C2 is a doozy. We have a 6-11 matchup featuring two of last year's tournament teams. Defending runner-up Thayer Central hosts a cast of Hastings St. Cecilia veterans featuring one of the most efficient attackers in the state.

Two more red-hot schools square off with Oakland-Craig and Nebraska Christian meeting in the 7-10 slot. At least one of these teams has reached Lincoln in all but one season since 2017. The streak will continue, but who will advance?

The No. 11 seed seems to be ubiquitous here. Our late-season features have harped on Sutton's recent charge, and the Fillies have major upset potential against last year's D1 runner-up, Exeter-Milligan/Friend.

We briefly alluded to Cross County in our last segment, but let's bring the Cougars back up ahead of their showdown with Morrill. The squad from Stromsburg has brought up a host of stellar sophomores to complement one of the highest-scoring offenses on the small-town circuit.

Class D2 beckons. If you like terminal scoring, O'Neill St. Mary's and Red Cloud would be worthy underdog picks. Of course, this is the postseason, and anyone can sneak up on us.
