Some things never change.

South Central NE means business whenever it travels to Kansas City. This group of central Nebraska underdogs embarks on the annual Show Me Qualifier with expectations of securing USAV Nationals bids. And South Central has done exactly that, year after year.

Last season's 15 Black crew nabbed a bid at Show Me, laying the foundation for a run to the podium in Dallas that summer. Perhaps the "underdog" distinction began to wear off as South Central NE made waves on club volleyball's biggest stage.

So, we could properly label this year's 16 Black team as a Show Me title threat in the 16 American Blue division. However, earning a bid in this division demands a near-perfect weekend, with only one berth available in each of the "Blue" and "Red" groups. But South Central NE has never shied away from the Show Me spotlight.

Our first Kansas City entry in the Nebraska Bid Tracker series covers South Central NE 16 Black's rise to the top with an unblemished record.

Consistent Excellence

It's hard to draw up a more dominant weekend than the one South Central NE put together en route to a division championship.

16 Black made an instant impression with three Saturday sweeps to open its Show Me slate. This single-day feat is impressive enough, but South Central NE repeated the same triumph in Sunday's second round. The team only allowed 20 or more points in three of its twelve sets played, cementing 16 Black as a surefire title threat heading into Monday's bracket.

Regional intrigue mounted as South Central NE met [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 16 Black in the Round of 16. The sweep streak extended to seven. Then, South Central toppled a home-standing PVA group to push past the quarterfinals.

16 Black had effectively limited any drama or nail-biting moments, but that trend would change in the team's penultimate showdown against Northern Lights 16-R. South Central NE struck first in the semifinal match, but 16-R responded to hand 16 Black its first set loss of the entire weekend. It was "gut check time" for a spot in the championship match.

And South Central NE had an emphatic answer. A 15-6 win in the tiebreaker proved 16 Black's ability to bounce back from a rare dose of adversity. One obstacle remained for that coveted bid.

Iowa's Adrenaline 16 Dan was the opponent. Once again, South Central NE provided a resilient display by fighting off a valiant comeback bid. A deuce Set 2 win engraved the gold ball.

It was heading back to Aurora.

We were overdue for a check-in with Nebraska's exceptional cast of rural stars.

16 Black's roster benefits from tremendous year-over-year continuity after 2025's postseason success. This group stuck together to build something great this spring, and Show Me was the place to pay it off.

A couple of these athletes join forces outside the club stage, too. We have to start with the setter-hitter duo of [player_tooltip player_id='572563' first='Hailey' last='Hoff'] and [player_tooltip player_id='570568' first='Kaitlyn' last='Staehr'], a pair of Aurora High School sophomores who nabbed all-GJNC honors last year. These two remain the focal point of 16 Black's outstanding ball control and scoring prowess. Staehr was the clear go-to terminator on the outside at Show Me, producing indefensible heat at the left pin. This high-flying athlete capitalized on her uncanny connection with Hoff, whose pace and distribution kept 16 Black a step ahead in Kansas City.

And Hoff had plenty of other explosive attackers to feed at the net. Holdrege middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='774622' first='Gracie' last='Johnson'] churned out some of 16 Black's most eye-popping swings at last weekend's event. She runs a dynamic array of routes in first-ball situations, giving opposing blockers plenty to think about. Johnson combines that versatility with an absolute hammer on one-tempo sets. Last year's state title match appearance was just the start of Johnson's meteoric rise.

[player_tooltip player_id='774618' first='Ashlyn' last='Barber'] bolsters this strength in the middle. The Adams Central star is particularly proficient on 'gap' plays that allow her to operate away from the setter. Barber is building off a sophomore campaign with a hitting percentage north of 0.300, and her efficiency has escalated further with South Central NE.

Meanwhile, [player_tooltip player_id='572605' first='Aly' last='Cederburg'] has emerged as the ultimate "wildcard" player in the 16 Black frontcourt. Her vast experience as a middle blocker makes her a worthy choice for that position, but Cederburg also frequents the right pin while suiting up for South Central. She has emerged as an imposing wing blocker at the opposite spot and can do serious damage as a transition attacker.

Multi-position versatility helps encapsulate other 16 Black standouts like [player_tooltip player_id='570903' first='Kamryn' last='Klockman'] and [player_tooltip player_id='774620' first='Bella' last='Heins']. Klockman has been on our radar for a while after she wielded her well-rounded game at one of our showcase events. She dished out some clutch swings on the left side in Kansas City, but she also has takeover potential as an opposite.

Johnson (8) and Hoff

Heins does whatever is necessary to boost 16 Black's ball control. She has been part of David City High School's starting setter rotation since she arrived on the scene as a freshman. Heins offers those skills in the South Central NE lineup, but she has also added some game-changing defensive work to her repertoire.

We might as well bring [player_tooltip player_id='702684' first='Bentleigh' last='Dugan'] into this discussion. The Central Valley outside hitter is new to the South Central fray, and she's already making gains in every area of her game. Dugan can readily shoulder a six-rotation role on the right side, or she can sway 16 Black's first contacts as a middle-back DS. Like many of the athletes mentioned here, Dugan has amassed invaluable experience on the state tournament stage and has applied that to her full prep calendar.

Everything gets tied together at the libero spot. Milford sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='573571' first='Adalyn' last='Cisneros'] hoisted a state championship trophy last fall, but her competitive fire and motivation have never waned. If anything, this instinctive defender is playing her best volleyball while guiding South Central NE's ever-changing backcourt unit. Cisneros is the kind of libero who forms the foundation for team success, as we've seen throughout her playing career.

And that team success will roll on as South Central NE prepares for another USAV Nationals journey. We can't wait to watch it unfold.
