The Red Rock Rave National Qualifier in Las Vegas once again featured some of the most competitive teams in the country, and one program that truly earned respect over the course of the weekend was McAllen Fierce 17-1. Representing South Texas with pride, this group put together one of the most impressive runs of the entire event thanks to outstanding ball control, relentless team defense, and smart offensive execution.

Day one and day two could not have gone much better for McAllen Fierce 17-1 as they powered through both rounds of pool play without suffering a single loss. Their ability to stay calm in tight moments while consistently making the right plays allowed them to advance into the Gold Bracket on day three. What stood out the most about this team was the mentality they brought to the court. This is a group that simply does not understand the word quit. Every rally was played with urgency, toughness, and an attitude that they were going to compete no matter who was on the other side of the net.

One of the biggest reasons for their success was the steady and confident play of setter [player_tooltip player_id='827571' first='Natalia' last='Gonzalez']. She did a tremendous job distributing the ball to all of her hitters and keeping the offense balanced throughout the tournament. Her quick footwork allowed her to get into great position even when passes were off the net, and her soft hands helped create consistent scoring opportunities for her teammates. She also applied pressure from the service line with laser like serves that created trouble for opposing passers. Just as important as her skill was her competitive spirit. She pushed herself every point and brought an energy that helped elevate the entire team.

The connection between Gonzalez and middle Savana Rivera was especially impressive to watch. The two of them used the quick set extremely effectively, creating one on one opportunities against opposing middles throughout the Gold Bracket. Rivera attacked the ball with confidence and aggression while also showing great versatility with her shot selection. She was able to stay open and hit the cut shot with precision, and she also showed the ability to turn the ball back toward zone one when the block took away her first option. Defensively, she made her presence known with several key solo blocks that completely shifted momentum in crucial moments. Her performance at the net played a major role in helping her team stay competitive against some of the top squads in the tournament.

In the back row, libero [player_tooltip player_id='322364' first='Izabella' last='Cano'] turned in a performance that proved she is one of the most complete liberos in the South Texas region. She showed excellent control when passing tough serves and demonstrated the ability to use both her hands and her platform to keep the ball in play. Her movement around the court and her ability to redirect difficult balls back to the setter helped extend countless rallies. Just as important was the calm leadership she brought in pressure situations. Players who can keep their team composed in the biggest moments are extremely valuable, and Cano clearly fits that description. All college coaches should really give her a look as she can definitely play at the next level.

Offensively, outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='443003' first='Abryella' last='Ysquierdo'] delivered one big play after another despite being undersized compared to many of the attackers she faced. She relied on her athleticism and high volleyball IQ to create scoring opportunities when the situation was toughest. Her ability to mix powerful swings with smart off speed shots kept opposing defenses guessing throughout the tournament. Her cross court attacks from the front row and her back row swings were especially effective, and her competitive fire was impossible to miss.

[player_tooltip player_id='837838' first='Danara' last='Cardenas'] and [player_tooltip player_id='818554' first='Daniela' last='Avila'] also provided consistent offensive production all weekend long, helping give the team valuable balance in high pressure matches. Another major bright spot was left handed right side Jaymie Villanueva, who scored at a high level from the opposite position. Her timing on both high tempo attacks and quick connections with her setter was extremely impressive. Even when matched up against taller blockers, she relied on excellent technique and smart shot selection to remain effective.

The team entered the semifinal match with a legitimate chance to advance to the championship and played with incredible heart before falling just short in a tightly contested 16-14 third set. Instead of letting that loss affect them, McAllen Fierce 17-1 responded the right way by bouncing back to win their final match and secure a third place finish. Their performance throughout the weekend showed resilience, chemistry, and a willingness to compete at the highest level.

With a few more opportunities ahead of them to earn a bid to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship this summer, this is clearly a team that has the ability to get the job done. Based on what was displayed in Las Vegas, McAllen Fierce 17-1 is absolutely a squad to watch for the rest of the season. Please help us congratulate them on an outstanding finish at one of the toughest national qualifiers in the country.
