The South Dakota Class of 2027 is a special group. As I reflect on the past year and now in the middle of another club season, this class has consistently made its presence known. These athletes have given college coaches across the country plenty to talk about, and scouts from other states continue to be impressed by the level of talent coming out of the Dakotas. Players like these are putting our region firmly on the map, and that's something our volleyball community can be proud of.

What stands out about this group goes far beyond wins or highlight plays. It's about how they represent the name on the front of their jersey and the way they carry themselves every time they step into the gym. These athletes lead by example. They are leaders for their teams, role models for younger players watching them, and competitors who understand that being elite takes work both on and off the court.

Don't just take my word for it — get in the gym and watch them compete. You'll quickly see why these players are considered the total package.

Let's take a look at the Top 5 committed players in South Dakota's Class of 2027.

When you talk about players who have elevated the profile of South Dakota volleyball, [player_tooltip player_id='835393' first='Madelynn' last='Henry'] is a name that quickly comes to mind. The 2027 standout outside hitter has continued to stack accolades throughout her career, earning USA Volleyball NTDP recognition, JVA All-National Team honors, First Team All-State selection, and an invitation to the prestigious UA Next stage. Her impact at the high school level has been nothing short of remarkable as well, already surpassing 2,100 career kills and over 1,100 digs with another season still ahead of her. That combination of production, versatility, and consistency ultimately led to her commitment to the University of Oregon, where she will continue her career at the highest level of Division I volleyball.

Henry's game is defined by her ability to take control of rallies from the outside pin. She attacks with a high contact point and explosive arm swing, giving her the ability to score in system with power and pace. However, what truly makes her difficult to defend is how composed she remains when plays break down. Henry shows advanced body control and court awareness, adjusting mid-air to tool the block, drop controlled off-speed shots, or find the deep corners of the court. In serve-receive she is steady and reliable, allowing her team to stay in system, and her ability to transition quickly from passer to attacker makes her a constant threat on every rally. Defensively, she adds another layer of value, reading swings well and contributing key digs from the backcourt.

What separates Henry even further is the way she leads within her program and community. She competes with intensity, holds herself to a high standard, and consistently sets the tone through her preparation and work ethic. Her leadership isn't just vocal—it's visible in how she trains, how she competes, and how she represents her team. Younger athletes look up to her, teammates rely on her, and coaches trust her to deliver in big moments. Henry represents everything you want in a top-ranked player—production, presence, and leadership that elevates an entire program. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='828352' first='Ruthie' last='Robinson'] has become one of the defining front-row players in South Dakota's Class of 2027, and it doesn't take long watching her compete to understand why. A USA Volleyball NTDP selection and Creighton commit, Robinson has developed into a middle blocker who influences nearly every rally when she's on the court. At 6'1”, she brings a rare combination of length, quickness along the net, and a strong volleyball IQ that allows her to control the middle in ways few players can.

Defensively, Robinson provides a true presence at the net. Her lateral movement allows her to close blocks quickly, sealing seams and forcing attackers into difficult swings. She reads the setter well, tracks offensive patterns, and times her jumps to challenge hitters at their highest contact point. The result is a middle blocker who doesn't just record blocks—she changes offensive decisions and disrupts rhythm on the other side of the net.

Offensively, Robinson adds another layer of pressure for opposing defenses. She runs the middle with strong tempo, stays available in transition, and understands how to find space when blockers begin to commit. Whether attacking a quick in front or connecting on the slide behind the setter, she plays with confidence and control, consistently giving her team a reliable scoring option in the middle of the court.

What makes Robinson stand out even more is the example she sets beyond the stat sheet. She carries herself with maturity, competes with purpose, and brings a steady leadership presence to the gym. Younger players watch how she trains, prepares, and represents her program, making her the kind of athlete others naturally look up to. Her ability to lead by example is just as impactful as the plays she makes during matches.

Those qualities—combined with her physical tools and competitive drive—made her a perfect fit for Creighton University, where she will continue her career at the Division I level. Robinson represents everything you want in a middle blocker: a player who anchors the net, contributes offensively, and sets the standard for those around her. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

From the outside pin, Stiff plays with a calm confidence that stands out immediately. She approaches the game with strong fundamentals and an advanced understanding of how to score. Her approach mechanics are consistent, allowing her to generate power while maintaining control of her swing. Whether attacking high hands, snapping the ball cross-court, or finding open space deep in the corner, Stiff shows the ability to finish points with precision rather than relying on power alone.

Her value to a team goes far beyond offense. Stiff contributes across the entire court—she is a reliable passer in serve receive, transitions quickly into attack, and plays disciplined defense in the back row.
