Who’s Who? Freshman Hitters on the Radar

The physical tools are still developing, the game is still speeding up, and many athletes are only beginning to understand how their skill set fits into the demands of high-level volleyball. For college coaches tracking the earliest stages of the 2029 class, the focus is rarely on finished products. Instead, the question is projection. Which athletes show the instincts, work habits, and competitive traits that suggest long-term growth?   At this stage, hitters are learning how to manage far more than just their swing. They are beginning to read the block, handle out-of-system situations, and develop the discipline required to score against organized defenses. Just as important is how they approach improvement. The athletes who stand out early are often the ones who show curiosity about their game, who actively work to strengthen weaknesses, and who understand the role they play within the team structure.   The freshmen featured here are beginning to show those developmental signals. Each brings a clear strength to the court while intentionally working on another area of growth. Their goals reflect athletes who are learning how to contribute, compete, and build the foundation of their future game. Her vertical jump and court awareness allow her to anticipate plays and move into position quickly, giving her opportunities to impact rallies offensively and defensively. De Lira is currently concentrating on strengthening her defensive skills through focused training designed to improve speed and footwork while expanding her role as a complete player. Her goals center on learning the demands of a more competitive club environment while refining her hitting technique and generating more offensive production. Off the court, De Lira's resilience defines her story. Nicknamed “Little Superhero” by her family, she has overcome medical challenges and setbacks while maintaining a determined and positive outlook.   Michelle Bamford @Coachable247       [player_tooltip player_id='697336' first='Johanna' last='Lawler'] brings versatility to the front row through her ability to attack from multiple routes and create scoring angles as a hitter. Her offensive approach shows an understanding of how to vary tempo and placement, allowing her to remain productive across different sets and situations. Lawler is currently working to increase her vertical and overall explosiveness, incorporating jump workouts and box training to elevate her physical presence at the net. Her goal centers on developing consistency while continuing to improve across all areas of her game. Away from volleyball, Lawler spends time raising a market lamb and even built the pen with her father, a project that reflects both work ethic and hands-on discipline. Her presence on the court is built around encouraging teammates and contributing to a positive competitive environment. Tyra is currently focusing on refining timing, quickness, and court vision through beach volleyball, strength training, and private instruction during the offseason. Her goals include improving consistency while strengthening her defensive contributions. Away from competition, Tyra describes herself as outgoing and curious, someone who asks questions and engages with others once relationships begin to build. Davis is currently focused on refining the speed of her approach, working to become quicker and more explosive as she transitions into her swing. Her goals center on continuing to build strength and increasing the pace of her offensive game. Outside of volleyball, Davis enjoys traveling internationally, an experience that often broadens perspective and adaptability in young athletes. Her goals include developing a high IQ shot selection while contributing as a six-rotation option who provides steady leadership under pressure. Off the court, Bayyari's entrepreneurial spirit stands out. At ten years old she launched her own ice cream business, creating recipes, designing a logo, and successfully selling out her first pop-up event. Her ability to read opposing hitters and react quickly allows her to influence rallies defensively while adding pressure along the front row. Foster is currently developing her defensive consistency, particularly in serve receive, by dedicating extra training time to platform control and footwork. Her goals focus on becoming a versatile and dependable player who can execute a variety of responsibilities for her team. That adaptability already shows in her willingness to play multiple positions when needed.
