The final group of Week 2 at the SLC Showdown Showcase brings together another impressive collection of young liberos and defensive specialists who continue to define the importance of back-row play. The spotlight is on athletes who are still early in their high school careers but already demonstrate strong instincts, growing consistency, and a clear understanding of defensive responsibilities.

These players each bring something different to the court—whether it's calm control in serve/receive, athletic range in transition, or fearless effort in scramble situations. While their styles vary, they all share the same foundation: a commitment to defense, communication, and doing the small things that influence every rally. This final group of the week reinforces just how deep and promising the next generation of defensive talent truly is.

[player_tooltip player_id='727053' first='Kyndal' last='Fickett']

[player_tooltip player_id='727053' first='Kyndal' last='Fickett'], 2029.

Fickett is a 5'4" DS/L from Yucaipa High School in California, class of 2029, who plays with steady control and strong fundamentals. She shows consistency in serve/receive, keeping her platform quiet and stable through contact. Fickett reads the ball well off the server's hand and does a good job staying balanced in transition. Her game is built on reliability, and she continues to develop into a dependable back-row presence who minimizes errors and keeps her team in system.

Caitlyn Brown

Brown is a 5'6" defensive specialist from The King's Academy in California, class of 2029, who brings a composed and disciplined approach to defense. She moves efficiently in the back row and positions herself well to handle both deep and short balls. Brown shows solid anticipation when reading hitters and does a good job adjusting to changes in tempo. Her ability to stay calm under pressure and deliver clean passes makes her a steady option in serve receive rotations.

[player_tooltip player_id='978747' first='Avery' last='Johns']

Johns is a 5'7" DS/L from Mira Costa High School in California, class of 2029, who stands out with her combination of size, coverage, and court awareness. She uses her length effectively to cover seams and extend her defensive range, making her difficult to beat in transition. Johns shows strong communication skills and is active in organizing the back row. Her physical tools, paired with improving instincts, give her strong long-term potential as a high-level defender.

Freya Jensen

Jensen is a 5'5" DS/L from South Anchorage High School in Alaska, class of 2030, who plays with noticeable energy and quick reactions. She is active in scramble defense and is willing to chase down extended plays, helping her team stay alive in difficult situations. Jensen reads developing attacks well and reacts quickly off contact. Her effort level and defensive range stand out, especially given her early stage of development. One of my favorites of the day, I cannot wait to watch this athlete develop further.

[player_tooltip player_id='952859' first='Kilinahe' last='Kaopuiki']

Kaopuiki is a 5'4" defensive specialist from Punahou School in Hawaii, class of 2029, who brings a strong sense of control and awareness to the back row. She is composed in serve/receive and consistently delivers controlled, playable passes. Kaopuiki shows good spatial awareness, often positioning herself early and effectively to read angles. Her calm demeanor and technical consistency make her a dependable presence who helps stabilize her team's defensive structure.
