Washington 2027 Middles at GJNC 18 Nationals

Middle blockers are far more than just "tall girls" at the net; they are the anchors of the defense and the engines of the offense. Their presence can dictate the flow of a match, acting as the first line of defense that forces opposing hitters to adjust their shots and the primary offensive threat that keeps a defense guessing.   When you have a middle who can "close the block" consistently, the back-row defense becomes a system rather than a guessing game. These young middles are proving that they are multi-tool prospects, capable of neutralizing a superstar hitter one moment and terminating a slide at the 10-foot line the next. Here are six dynamic class of 2027 Middles to Watch at 18 Nationals this weekend.    McGregor is working on the pin for Excel NW 18-LUX; her squad will be in Reno, and she has been solid in serve-receive and as an offensive force. The Kelso 2027 prospect is finding angles early as a passer and working hard to keep her platform away from her body. McGregor has been able to create points out of system with hard swings off the edge of the block, tips to the middle of the court, and a power toss to the corner.     Apex NW 18 Empire has two junior middles; Eshius is one of them, and the 2027 prospect from Lynden Christian is a tough, athletic player at the net. She plays with a terrific feel for finding the gaps and keeping herself separated from the opposing middle. Eshuis has a snappy arm and good timing in front and behind her setter, and she has smooth control when she drops in a sneaky tip in front of defenders who are on their heels.     We love the intensity Stevens plays with in the middle; she caught our eye at the Matt Hartner in Eugene and has been rolling through the club season. She is an outstanding worker on the block with great range and the power and endurance to get off the floor strong multiple times in a rally. Stevens attacks with a big hand and a loose arm, generating heat on her swings. PSVBA smartly moves her around to keep defenses honest, and she looks especially strong scoring from the right side.     Smith is a versatile and skilled MB/RS/OH from West Valley in Spokane. She has had an excellent club season with the Kokua 18 squad, showing off a more complete game than a typical middle would. Smith can work with a challenging set from the pins or the middle and find a spot to score with a roll or controlled swing to the deep corner. She is a tireless blocker and works hard to set up in the correct position, whether she is patrolling the middle or putting up a wall in front of a tough attacker on the pins.     De Lange has truly grown (possibly literally) as a player. She is chasing down slides and hammering them down, and her footwork and routes as an attacker are precise and decisive. The Apex NW 18 Empire prospect has a high arm angle and is overpowering undersized blockers even when the block is set. De Lange continues to be a strong and consistent blocker herself and will be a great addition to a college program.     Varda, a 2027 middle from Gallatin High School in Montana, is headed to Nationals with CPA 18 Benson. The long, athletic Kentucky commit is an impressive athlete and has played some right side this season to help shut down outside hitters. Varda has a serious work ethic, a high ceiling, and is wired to improve her game.
