Even playing in the 15's division, this roster already shows a level of composure and understanding that feels ahead of their age. They are not simply relying on athletic ability to win points. This group competes with discipline, communicates well through momentum swings, and understands how to stay connected when rallies become chaotic.

What stands out most is how complete this team already looks across multiple positions. The setters are learning how to move blockers and control tempo instead of simply putting the ball in play. The pins are finding ways to score without forcing bad swings into blocks, and the middles continue creating pressure at the net long after the first touch of the rally. Add in defenders who understand first contact and positioning, and this becomes a group capable of competing well beyond their age division.

The scary part is how much growth still remains ahead for this roster.

[player_tooltip player_id='878270' first='Sylvia' last='Heusinkvelt'] | Pin

[player_tooltip player_id='878270' first='Sylvia' last='Heusinkvelt'] brings confidence to the pin and continues finding ways to impact matches even when rallies do not go perfectly. What caught my attention is how comfortable she looks making adjustments mid-play. If the block takes away her first option, she still finds ways to create points with smarter swings, sharper angles, and better placement.

She also stays active through transition instead of fading out after first contact. You can see her continuing to work herself back into rallies, which creates extra pressure on defenses over the course of a match.

[player_tooltip player_id='946505' first='Angelina' last='Hoang'] | Middle

[player_tooltip player_id='946505' first='Angelina' last='Hoang'] continues standing out because of how hard she works laterally across the net. She does not get caught ball watching. Instead, she tracks hitters, closes blocks, and keeps working to take away angles before attackers fully commit to swings.

Offensively, she gets off the net quickly in transition and stays available even during long rallies. Middles who continue competing that hard point after point create pressure that does not always show up on the stat sheet, but completely changes the flow of matches.

[player_tooltip player_id='918647' first='Stella' last='Jensen'] | Defense

[player_tooltip player_id='918647' first='Stella' last='Jensen'] brings calmness to the back row that teams need during pressure moments. She stays balanced in serve receive, absorbs pace without overreacting, and consistently delivers first contact that keeps the offense in rhythm.

Defensively, she reads hitters early and positions herself before the ball is even attacked. What I appreciated most is that she never looks sped up by the match. Even during scrappy rallies, she stays composed and continues making controlled defensive plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='762209' first='Avery' last='Lane'] | Pin

[player_tooltip player_id='762209' first='Avery' last='Lane'] plays with energy that immediately changes the feel of the court. She stays aggressive offensively, but what really stood out is how hard she competes through transition. She is constantly moving, constantly available, and continues pushing to become an option offensively after defensive contacts.

You can feel her emotion during big points, and teammates clearly feed off that momentum. Those types of athletes become incredibly valuable during long tournament weekends.

[player_tooltip player_id='748721' first='Britta' last='Petersen'] | Pin

[player_tooltip player_id='748721' first='Britta' last='Petersen'] continues showing growth because she is learning how to score smarter instead of simply swinging harder. She sees the block better, understands when to attack deep corners, and stays patient during longer rallies instead of forcing low-percentage swings.

I also liked how composed she stayed when plays broke down. Some younger players rush during chaotic moments. Britta continues competing calmly and works to create better offensive opportunities.

[player_tooltip player_id='766302' first='Penelope' last='Rivero'] | Setter

[player_tooltip player_id='766302' first='Penelope' last='Rivero'] continues looking like one of the more advanced setters in this age group because of how well she controls the pace of the offense. She understands how to hold blockers with her eyes, change tempo, and create cleaner attacking windows for hitters.

What really grabbed my attention is how confidently she handles out-of-system moments. Even when passes drift off the net, she still looks to generate offense instead of simply sending free balls over. That poise and decision making are difficult to teach at this age.

[player_tooltip player_id='785915' first='Jillian' last='Rowe'] | Middle

[player_tooltip player_id='785915' first='Jillian' last='Rowe'] brings physicality and toughness to the middle position and continues creating problems at the net on both sides of the ball. She is becoming more disciplined with her blocking timing and works hard to press over the net instead of drifting late.

Offensively, she attacks confidently and stays aggressive in transition. You can feel the energy she brings after big plays, especially when momentum starts shifting during matches.

[player_tooltip player_id='522701' first='Malea' last='Stevens'] | Defense

[player_tooltip player_id='522701' first='Malea' last='Stevens'] plays with defensive urgency that jumps out quickly. She covers ground aggressively, communicates well with teammates, and continues fighting for balls that many players would give up on.

What stood out most is how controlled she stays while moving at that pace. She keeps her platform disciplined, stays low defensively, and works hard to keep rallies alive without losing control of first contact.

Amy Utecht | Setter

Amy Utecht gives this team another setter capable of controlling the flow of the match. She stays composed during pressure situations and does a great job adjusting tempo depending on what the offense needs in the moment.

One thing I noticed is how engaged she stays with hitters throughout matches. She communicates constantly, keeps teammates involved, and continues looking for ways to create offensive rhythm even during broken rallies.

Kenzie Wiese | Pin

Kenzie Wiese rounds out this group with another pin capable of impacting multiple phases of the game. She attacks confidently, but what impressed me most is her ability to see the court offensively. Instead of forcing swings into solid blocks, she works to create points with smarter placement and better shot decisions.

She also competes hard in serve receive and transition play, giving the team another complete athlete who can stay on the floor during pressure moments.

Northern Lights 15-2 may still be young, but this is a team already showing advanced volleyball instincts and maturity. They compete with discipline, communicate well, and continue finding ways to stay connected emotionally when matches become difficult. Those little details become incredibly important this time of year.

The Gauntlet should provide exactly the kind of preparation this group needs before heading toward Nationals. If this team continues trending upward the way they have all season, they are going to be a difficult matchup for anyone standing across the net.~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

In Case You Missed It
