Pass is on, setter is balanced, ball is out quick, and now you're dealing with a full offense. That's where it starts with [program_tooltip program_id='431951' first='Mizuno' last='Northern Lights'].

They've already earned their bid to USAV Nationals, so this part of the season is different. You can see they're not experimenting. They're tightening. The details are sharper, the movement is cleaner, and the decisions are coming quicker.

Once they get into system, the tempo changes.

[player_tooltip player_id='545494' first='Mary' last='Berran'] does a really good job controlling that. She gets square, delivers a consistent release, and keeps hitters in rhythm. The ball isn't hanging, and it's not late. It's on time, which is everything when you're trying to beat a block to a spot. [player_tooltip player_id='918395' first='Elaine' last='Stellmaker'] keeps that same feel when she's running it. No extra movement, no forcing—just getting the ball where it needs to be so the hitters can go to work.

And when the pins are getting those looks, they're hard to slow down.

[player_tooltip player_id='499195' first='Mesa' last='Jameson'] is the one you feel right away. The approach is clean, the contact is high, and she's not guessing. She's reading. If the block is late, she's going high hands. If the seam opens, she's taking it. If the defense creeps, she's going deep. There's no panic in her swing, even when the ball is off the net. That's what makes her tough—she doesn't need perfect to score.

[player_tooltip player_id='545493' first='Cora' last='Thiemann'] gives you a steady option next to her. Same thing—clean footwork, balanced contact, and she stays available. When the rally extends, she's still there, still an option. That matters more as matches go on.

[player_tooltip player_id='442682' first='Ella' last='Zieske'] changes the pace a little. She'll mix in off-speed, use the block, find space when the defense starts sitting. She's not just trying to terminate every swing, she's trying to win the rally.

On the right side, [player_tooltip player_id='545492' first='Payton' last='Miller'] keeps things simple in a good way. She's available, gets to a high contact, and gives the team a swing even when the set isn't perfect. That's what you need when things break down.

Through the middle, you can see the work showing up more as the match goes on.

[player_tooltip player_id='545498' first='Brielle' last='Gunderson'] stays active. She doesn't disappear after the first ball. She keeps moving, keeps calling for it, and that holds the block just long enough to open up the pins. [player_tooltip player_id='702576' first='Lillian' last='Ruschoff'] is starting to take away more at the net. She's getting her hands across, sealing space, and forcing hitters to adjust their swings. You might not see a ton of stuff blocks, but you'll see swings get smaller because of her.

That's where the defense starts to come into play.

[player_tooltip player_id='748674' first='Louise' last='Mahoney'] is controlling first contact. She's not just digging balls—she's placing them. Platform is set early, angle is clean, and the ball is going to target. That's what allows everything else to run. [player_tooltip player_id='830647' first='Brynlee' last='Opland'] adds to that. She moves well, stays balanced, and transitions cleanly from defense into the next phase of the play.

What you start to notice after a few rotations is how connected everything is.

The pass leads to tempo. The tempo holds the block. The block takes away options. The defense is already set. Then they transition and do it again.

Nothing feels rushed.

Even when the rally gets long, they stay in it. They don't try to force the end of the point. They just keep working until they get the right swing.

That's where they start to separate.

You'll see it in stretches. A good pass turns into a clean swing. A block slows the next ball down. They reset, run it again, and now they're back in system. A few of those in a row, and the momentum shifts.

At the net, the block is doing more than just getting up. They're taking away space. Hands are pressing, seams are closing, and now hitters have to adjust mid-swing. That's where balls start coming into the defense instead of getting clean looks.

Heading into The Gauntlet, this is the part that matters.

Teams are going to serve tougher. They're going to push them off the net. The block is going to close faster. That's where first contact and decision making show up.

They've got the pieces. Now it's about doing it when the game speeds up.

For college coaches, this is a group you don't just glance at.

Watch how the setter gets the ball out. Watch the footwork on the outside. Watch how the middles close and how the defense sets behind it. Watch how they handle the second and third contacts in a rally.

That's where the difference is.

This isn't just a talented group.

This is a team that understands how to play. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

In Case You Missed It
