We continue our “Playing Up” series by highlighting each of the best examples of a younger athlete on an older roster. Each position in Indiana has plenty to choose from in the “playing up” category, but only a few really caught our eye this spring. Here are four setters that are showing out and holding their own with bigger, older and more mature teams.

I haven't even started the 2030 recruiting watch list yet, but if I did, Stella would be one of the first I'd add. From a family of Reeds at GCA that love their volleyball, Stella falls right in line with using her athleticism and volleyball acuity to make setting look very natural early on in her career. Although she's tucked away on Circle's 15 White squad, she's had a ton of experience this spring playing bigger, stronger and faster competition and doing just fine in holding her own.

On TI's 18.2 squad, Maeve uses her strong hands and solid body control to make each and every ball hittable out of her hands. I can't tell you how many time I've seen Miss Jordan take what looks like a tight pass that's unsettable and turn it into points for her hitters. She also defends her position well at the net and on the floor, which is a trait not found in every setter in the class of ‘27.

Easily one of the best overall players in the class of 2030, Sarah is the top setter for TI's 15.1 for good reason. Long, lean and athletic, Miss Clarkston is the heir apparent at Roncalli in the setting department, and her overall game makes her look far more mature than her years would lead the average fan to believe. As a setter, Sarah's high and consistent hands feed her hitters in-tempo and hittable balls so that they can score points at will. There's a reason why this team is one of the better 15s teams in Indiana, and Sarah is a huge part of that reason.

The top setter in the class of ‘28 in the state of Indiana, Maggie is a long, lean and smooth setter that has perfected a faster-than-average offense to her pin hitters. Already accustomed to open-level play in club and some of the toughest scheduling in all of Indiana 4A volleyball, Miss Sliwa makes setting look easy, as her mature and calm demeanor on the court leads by example for her fiery club squad. Defensively, well, she's 6'2”, so blocking comes easier than average to her. Her directed serving can also be a problem for opponents, and has no issue showing aggression both behind the baseline and at the net on two contacts.
