Bring on the 'bros.

We've been on a bit of a Kansas kick lately, especially with so many high-profile events flooding the April slate. Our most recent feature highlighted a stacked group of 2028 pin hitters who capitalized on that gauntlet, but that's not the only notable position group among Heart of America sophomores.

Of course, every successful team needs its backcourt anchor. Kansas clubs have been particularly effective in this area, with the Sunflower State becoming a libero pipeline for numerous college programs. Those recruiters will have a new wave of defenders to evaluate this summer, and this feature brings a few of them into the discussion.

Perhaps it's a stretch to label Johnson as a defensive specialist after her six-rotation explosion at last month's Show Me Qualifier. She received plenty of frontcourt reps en route to [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] 16 Black's runner-up finish in KC, showcasing her whippy arm on the left antenna. But even if Johnson wasn't along the net, her pinpoint passing and defense made her a mainstay in the 16 Black rotation. The Olathe Northwest sophomore is an essential part of 16 Black's elite unit on the end line. Johnson's willingness to do it all has made [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] a frontrunner for the ultimate 16 Open prize in Indianapolis this summer.

Like Johnson, Hargis is one of those stout defenders who isn't tethered to a single position. We saw her light up the back row at last year's Prep Dig Exposure Tour event in Kansas City, but Hargis morphs into a game-changing pin hitter when suiting up for Topeka Fury. She puts an impressive snap on the ball and can seamlessly transition from passing to attacking in the front row. Then, Hargis puts on her "DS cap" and becomes a leading defender for her up-and-coming Fury club. Hargis's next-level potential has soared in 2026.

KC Power's 16s depth has been a highlight of our recent Heart of America coverage. The club's 16-2 lineup has brought several notable names into focus after the team's 16 Liberty championship at Show Me. Fisher is one such athlete, as her adaptable backcourt work turned the tide during the title triumph. She seamlessly shifts positions in the serve-receive pattern, providing instant stability when she rotates into a match. Of course, Fisher can also don the contrasting jersey and become the full-time leader for KC Power 16-2. We'll look for her multi-faceted role as KC Power chases another climb to the top in Indianapolis.

This isn't the first time we've brought up 913 Athletics 16National during our late-season coverage. 2028 gems like Thompson have elevated the club's standing in the region, and the best could be yet to come. Thompson's flashy highlight tape is full of hustle players and eye-popping saves against cross-court hammers. Her eagerness to make unheralded, routine plays sticks out, too. A tough slate on the qualifier circuit has primed Thompson for a junior breakthrough at Spring Hill this fall.

Jimenez brings a second Olathe Northwest athlete into the fold. It's an embarrassment of backcourt riches for the Ravens, but Jimenez takes her talents to PVA on the club side. The Show Me Qualifier brought out the best in this agile libero, who passed huge chunks of the court for 16 Elite. Jimenez has a knack for placing the ball on her midline and producing predictable backspin for her setter. The result was a top-five placement in Show Me's 16 Open division, placing Jimenez and PVA on track for further progress in GJNC's most hotly contested field.

Southard can find several different ways to contribute to the ball control phase. She is an adept left-back defender who will not shy away from heavy heat down the line. However, Southard has also distinguished herself as an adept setter with the hands needed to pilot a quick, efficient offense. She tallied a handful of assists for Maize South last fall to accompany her second-straight triple-digit dig total from the back row. Shockwave 16-Black is happy to have this versatile standout in their corner for the 2026 season, making big impressions at venues like MEQ and Triple Crown NIT. April added to the narrative.
