They were the players making sure the rally stayed alive long enough for their teams to earn another swing.

A great defensive player has a way of changing the feel of a match. One dig can stop momentum. One quality pass can turn a difficult situation into an offensive opportunity. Throughout the Midwest National Tune Up, these athletes consistently found ways to do both. They covered ground, handled tough first contacts, extended rallies, and made life difficult on opposing attackers.

What stood out most was their ability to impact matches in moments that often go unnoticed. While the scoreboard may highlight the final kill, many of those points started because of the defensive effort and court awareness these players brought every time they stepped on the floor.

The following athletes caught my attention because they consistently found ways to influence the outcome of rallies and help their teams succeed. Their impact could be felt long before the ball ever hit the floor.

Every time I ended up back on [player_tooltip player_id='772368' first='Hannah' last='Presley']'s court, she seemed to be making another difficult play look routine. Whether it was a hard-driven ball or a scramble play that pulled her out of position, she stayed composed and found a way to keep the rally alive. What stuck with me most was how calm she remained when matches started speeding up. There was never a sense of panic. She simply kept delivering quality touches and giving her team opportunities to stay in system. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

Whenever a serve got tough or a rally started getting chaotic, Addison Pukrop seemed to be the player delivering the touch her team needed. She did a great job absorbing pace and keeping balls off the floor, but what really caught my attention was the confidence her teammates played with around her. There was trust in the backcourt, and Addison was a big reason why. By the end of the weekend, it felt like she was involved in nearly every momentum-changing defensive play on her side of the net. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='521949' first='Amelia' last='Glaeser'] never looked content waiting for the game to come to her. She played on the attack defensively, constantly moving, covering ground, and putting herself in position to make the next play. One of the things I kept noticing was how often a difficult defensive contact turned into a playable ball because of her effort. Some defenders keep rallies alive. Amelia created opportunities from them. That aggressive approach made her fun to watch throughout the event. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

Avery Clover seemed to have a feel for the game that allowed her to arrive in the right spot before the ball got there. The more I watched, the more I noticed how often she was already moving while others were still reacting. That anticipation helped her take away space and make plays that don't always show up in a stat sheet. Avery wasn't the loudest player in the gym, but she consistently found ways to make her presence felt through smart positioning and steady defensive play. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

There are defenders who make plays, and then there are defenders who seem to change the energy of a court. Carleigh Rymer did that several times throughout the weekend. She chased down balls that looked out of reach, extended rallies that appeared finished, and brought an edge to every point she played. The play itself was impressive, but it was often the reaction afterward that stood out. Teammates fed off her effort, and you could feel momentum shift when she came up with a big defensive stop. Those are the types of players every coach wants in the backcourt. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

In Case You Missed It
