A Class 1A finalist a year ago, the Wildcats proved they're a group capable of winning it all in 2026 by how well they matched up with solid bigger school programs at this event. They swept their match against West Central Thursday night to advance to Monday's regional semifinals.

Here's a closer look at student-athletes standing out followed by photos of Janesville:

Despite missing four matches with an injury, Sweeney enjoyed a healthy lead in kills among Janesville players. Her efficiency was high like it was last year, when as a freshman she powered the Wildcats all the way to the Class 1A state championship match. I've watched Sweeney play frequently during club ball the last several years, including this past season as part of a squad that finished second in Iowa for its age group. I didn't get to scout her much during the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite earlier this month as she was hobbled by a leg injury, but even at less than full strength she was impacting the action. Sweeney is one of Iowa's best sophomores as a dominant two-way middle that can take over matches and intimidate the opposition, forcing it to change its approach.

I've long been impressed with Pollock's play along the club circuit. She's been a consistent presence running the show for one of the better teams in her age group. It's a well-rounded set of skills at setter allowing for contributions to winning volleyball from all around the court. It was good to catch up with her again at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite earlier this month, when she was competing at a high level for one of Class 1A's top teams going against ranked squads from bigger schools. Like she did last year in guiding the Wildcats to the state championship match, Pollock used a steady hand and high volleyball IQ to shine.

Most successful volleyball programs these days boast a six-rotation outside hitter capable of impacting matches from all around the court. When watching Janesville compete against larger schools at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite earlier this month, that player was Anderson. The senior is an explosive athlete that rises up with a big vertical leap before lowering the boom with a heavy swing. She gets on top of the ball and generates velocity. Anderson's athleticism and quickness also aid her in the back row, where she's technically sound with a solid platform. The Wildcats have a chance to win it all this fall thanks to Anderson serving in a leading role.

Janesville presents plenty of problems for opponents with talent spread out throughout the lineup. The Wildcats are particularly tough to conquer in the middle of the net. While [player_tooltip player_id='887022' first='Quinn' last='Sweeney'] receives a lot of attention, and deservedly so, Meaney should be receiving her flowers for how she impacts matches at the position. She showed off her talents when I was scouting the squad earlier this month at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite. Going up against larger schools, Meaney flashed the ability to terminate points via traditional or quick sets. She's a good athlete that moves well and flows with the action. It helps in throwing up an effective block and being in the right position to deliver impactful plays.

Janesville put together a special season in 2025, advancing all the way to the Class 1A state championship match. The Wildcats have positioned themselves to take the next step and win in all this fall thanks in large part to a talented collection of hitters. The depth there can create contributors to the cause being overlooked. Hovenga proved worthy of her credit during an in-person scouting opportunity at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invite earlier this month. The senior was standing out through six rotations against larger schools. She was ending points at the pin with power and a keen feel for reading the opposing block. Hovenga also held up well in the back row in defending against the opposing attack or when starting transition off of serve-receive.

The high school volleyball years create wonderful life memories for everyone involved. Connections are strong.

That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.
