Perhaps we need further reminders that volleyball is the ultimate team sport.

Our player-focused features primarily discuss one athlete at a time, but we've diverged from that strategy in some of our recent 2028 spotlights. We've just covered a handful of setter-hitter duos across Nebraska's prep scene, with Part 1 and Part 2 dishing out several unstoppable tandems. However, on-court cooperation is not limited to second and third contacts.

Backcourt defense has never been a solo operation. Most elite club teams boast multiple defensive specialists who can shoulder multiple roles and turn the tide in close matches. Nebraska is no stranger to this trend.

Once again, we're bringing out 2028 standouts in pairs. This one's for the ‘bros.

[player_tooltip player_id='567542' first='Ava' last='Nowling'] and [player_tooltip player_id='575218' first='Avery' last='Whaley'] - Premier Nebraska 16 Gold

It's hard not to put the immediate spotlight on Premier Nebraska 16 Gold's trend-setting liberos.

Nowling and Whaley have been standouts at nearly every venue imaginable. They've earned top performer honors on the Prep Dig Circuit. They've helped their respective high schools reach the state tournament. And, best of all, they closed out last year's club campaign with a 15 USA title at GJNC.

Still, this defensive duo is aiming higher this summer. 16 Gold locked up its elusive Open berth through the Mideast Qualifier, propelling the team's backcourt gems further into the spotlight. Nowling has distinguished herself as one of the top liberos in Nebraska's rising junior class, stepping up as an unflappable passer in any zone. Whaley's willingness to shoulder any DS role has elevated her stock, and she's not afraid to step in as an out-of-system setter, either.

A major proving ground awaits against the nation's best.

[player_tooltip player_id='801200' first='Bella' last='Sadler'] and [player_tooltip player_id='959037' first='Tori' last='Barton'] - [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 16 Black

We can always rely on Nebraska ONE to churn out its share of libero stars.

The Class of 2028 has given us a wide array of Lincoln-area gems to cover in the back row. Sadler carries the banner for Lincoln Northeast and logged triple-digit dig totals in each of her upperclassman seasons with the Rockets. Meanwhile, Barton joins a stacked cast of defenders at Waverly High School, which has been a mainstay atop the Class B race.

Then, this pair converges on the club side. Nebraska ONE 16 Black boasts an impressive group of fleet-footed athletes who can shift momentum across the back row. Sadler has compiled an impressive highlight tape on the regional scene, but Barton has also created a permanent foothold in the starting rotation.

Either one can lock down the libero spot, and that's exactly what we'd expect from a Nebraska ONE roster.

[player_tooltip player_id='730560' first='Norah' last='Beran'] and Brianna Hull - [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 16 Black

VCNebraska 16 Black has a seemingly infinite pool of backcourt reinforcements.

Defensive excellence played a big part in getting this squad over the hump in 2026. Last year's 15s crew narrowly missed out on a GJNC bid through the Northern Lights Qualifier, but 16 Black made amends this spring. That still wasn't enough for VCNebraska, which progressed further up the ladder at the GPR Bid Tournament.

Beran has been a seamless addition to the VCNebraska gym. 16 Black harnesses her Zone 6 prowess while also trusting her to pick up seams in the defense. Then, 16 Black can weaponize Hull's game-changing serve and immediate backcourt influence in the right-back area.

This summer will be all about finding the right combinations before the big show in Indianapolis.

[player_tooltip player_id='774692' first='Lucy' last='Stockdale'] and Jenna Kathol - Club Legacy 16 Alpha

Club Legacy's ascent in the Great Plains hierarchy has been catalyzed by defensive stars from across the age spectrum.

Stockdale and Kathol set the standard for the 16s. This duo made enormous midseason gains at the Northern Lights Qualifier, helping 16 Alpha hoist Minneapolis' gold ball in the 16 American Blue division. We were treated to further breakthroughs at the Great Plains Region Bid Tournament, where defensive prowess was tested at every step.

Stockdale has been an exceptional backcourt anchor for this crew, providing constant vocal guidance in the serve-receive pattern. Meanwhile, Kathol has elevated her role in the middle-back area to cement 16 Alpha's pinpoint first contacts. Qualifier titles aren't possible without these widespread backcourt contributions--and from more than one player, too.

Jacie Kanngieser and [player_tooltip player_id='774675' first='Ariana' last='Rhode'] - [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] 16 Navy

Quality ball control still sets the pace in the [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] gym.

Kanngieser and Rhode have had a steady hand in unlocking 16 Navy's full terminal potential in first-ball situations. River City Jrs takes full advantage of their trips across the back row, no matter which lineup takes precedence. Rhode has a strong background as a pin hitter, giving her middle-back command a little extra boost. This is the perfect complement to Kanngieser's ever-present impact at the corner, digging serious heat down the line.

AAU Nationals will put this cohesion back on our coverage radar.
