Outside hitters are often remembered for the points they score, but the best ones leave their mark long before the ball reaches them. They communicate, transition quickly, defend with purpose, encourage teammates, and stay engaged from the first whistle to the final point. Those habits don't always appear in a stat sheet, but they consistently influence winning volleyball.

Throughout Session 1 of the USAV GJNC Showcase, this group of outside hitters separated themselves through their complete approach to the game. Their value extended well beyond attacking as they consistently found ways to contribute in every phase of play.

Mia Mathis immediately stood out as one of the more complete athletes on the floor. Her explosive arm swing generated quality pace, but it was her athleticism and defensive presence that continually caught my attention. She covered significant ground, moved aggressively toward every ball, and remained active whether she was attacking or blocking. Her clean blocking mechanics and ability to stay involved from rally to rally made her one of the most impactful outside hitters throughout the session.

Few athletes matched Alaysia Byam's physical presence and relentless motor. She attacked with power relative to her size, accelerated quickly to the ball, and competed with noticeable intensity throughout the showcase. What impressed me most, however, was her constant engagement. She communicated, led by example, and never appeared to take a play off. Her natural athleticism is obvious, but her effort and leadership elevated her overall performance even further.
