I am always fascinated by how recruiting shakes out. We've had three days of recruiting the Class of 2028 and we already have plenty to report. We can look at top ranked athletes, we can study where they are heading in terms of high level programs, but today we are going to take a look at the ones who are staying close to home. Shayla Rautenberg headlines the close to home commit where she grew up a Husker right outside of Lincoln, Nebraska and will be making that her home following her prep career. Who is staying close to home.

Illinois Takes Top [player_tooltip player_id='484408' first='Tatum' last='Kelly'] and [player_tooltip player_id='582261' first='Kolby' last='Ross']

[player_tooltip player_id='484408' first='Tatum' last='Kelly'] is the top prospect in the state of Illinois and a nationally ranked setter where [player_tooltip player_id='582261' first='Kolby' last='Ross'] is right behind her as one of the top six rotation outsides in the Illinois Class of 2028. Kelly went to camps at Indiana and Creighton, but at the end of the day it was the Illini. She plays with such poise and athleticism where she is a true orchestrator as a setter. [player_tooltip player_id='582261' first='Kolby' last='Ross'] is absolutely electric and has been a joy to watch play for the [program_tooltip program_id='431567' first='Adversity' last=''] 16 Adidas team. She is a high flyer who can score plenty of points on the outside and the middle back. This duo will be fun to see go head to head in the high school world knowing they will get to be on the same side of the net at Illinois.

From Iowa Premier to Northern Iowa

[player_tooltip player_id='545946' first='Addison' last='Waldorf'] and Hailey Wiederin have been quite the duo for Iowa Premier 16-1 out of the Des Moines area where they have earned back to back open division bids. Waldorf is the top setter in Iowa's Class of 2028 where she led her high school team to a state runner up finish this past fall and continues to improve each time she steps on the court. Wiederin has had a huge year soaring up the ranks where her length and athleticism has been impressive from the outside. Now she's striking the ball harder and will an evolved backcourt game she will be a six rotation scorer. The Panthers have been the gold standard of the Missouri Valley Conference and will continue to be with recruits like Waldorf and Wiederin.

[player_tooltip player_id='516002' first='Julia' last='Schlarbaum'] might be heading to a different state, but the Iowa United outside hitter gave her verbal to South Dakota. The Coyotes have been one of the top teams in the Summit League and have developed a strong pipeline of Iowa athletes.

Texas Continue To Keep To Athletes In State

Those Texas programs always make it a priority to keep the top athletes in the state. Multiple Texas schools found athletes on the first few days of recruiting. Sarah Floyd has been a physical force on the right side where her left handed swing is gnarly. The length and speed is tough to slow down, she will be heading to Austin to play for the Longhorns. Sydney Whisenton is such a dynamic athlete, she is one of the top attacker/setter combos in the country. She has been a leader for the Alamo 16s where she will take her game down the road to Waco. Dallas Skyline's top outside hitter Taylor Johnson gave her verbal to SMU. She will be staying in the metro where this SMU program is soaring with their recruiting classes as well as big time transfers.

Georgia On The Mind

A5 16 Gabe out of the Atlanta area has been one of the top 16s teams in the country. Not one - but thee top 16s team this year. They have the top 2029 in the country, but when Knox was out with an injury they were still able to win MEQ in Indy this past march. Georgia has capitalized on this group and was able to bring in setter [player_tooltip player_id='912878' first='Chelsea' last='Torrence'] and [player_tooltip player_id='827261' first='Mali' last='Nyankori'], a middle blocker. Both are nationally ranked and will make a great combo with the recruits in the Class of 2026 and 2027 that the Dogs have coming in.

Hayes Family Staying In-State

CarolineHayes, a 2028 libero will be staying close to home with her commitment to Central Florida. The libero from OTVA has been one of the top liberos in Florida, but there will still be a battle of being the top libero in the family. Her older sister Lily Hayes had a standout freshman year for the the Florida Gators and will be one of the top liberos in the college game this upcoming fall.
