They take away space, get their hands on swings, and can force hitters to start looking for another option. As we head into the season, here are a few players to watch who are tough to get around and can shut things down at the net.

[player_tooltip player_id='1004083' first='Lanee' last='Hams'] is fun to watch at the net because she seems to see the play developing early. She reads what is coming and gets herself in a good spot to challenge the hitter. I really like her hands when she goes up. She gets them over the net instead of just reaching straight up, and that takes away a lot of room for a hitter. Hams can make what looked like an open swing disappear pretty quickly. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='643679' first='Ava' last='Haack'] gets after it as a blocker. Her movement along the net stood out to me because she works to get all the way over and be part of the block, even when the set isn't directly in front of her. When Haack gets there, she gets up strong and gives the hitter a lot to work around. She can take away a swing completely, but I also like how many balls she can get a piece of and how often she gives her defense another chance to play. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='751564' first='Zoey' last='Leners'] has some really nice instincts as a blocker. She isn't jumping just because she sees someone going up on the other side. Leners watches the play and does a good job of putting herself where the attack is going. That makes her tough, as hitters do not always have the opening they believed they had. She can take away part of the court and make them change their shot at the last second. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1022726' first='Kyra' last='Welch'] can close some space in a hurry. I like how she works across the net and gets next to the blocker instead of leaving an easy seam for a hitter to find. Once Welch gets her hands up, she makes herself difficult to hit around. Her blocking also shows patience. She doesn't look like she is guessing at the net, and when she gets a good read, she can shut down a swing. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='919461' first='Danika' last='Gohr'] is one I would not want to see waiting on the other side of the net. Her hands are what stood out to me. She gets them across and takes away space above the net, which can make a hitter's window pretty small. Gohr can stuff a ball back down, but she does not need a big block to affect the play. A touch that changes the speed or direction of the ball can be just as valuable, and she gives her back row opportunities to turn those touches into points. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Thank you to all my readers for making this journey possible.
