No Easy Rotations: Six Players Who Make BT-Pope Must-See

Game Day: Tuesday, August 25 | 6:00 p.m. | Pace Academy, Atlanta   Tuesday's matchup between Blessed Trinity and Pope may be one of the best opportunities of the week to evaluate complete volleyball.   Pope is scheduled to face Pace Academy at 5:00 p.m. before meeting Blessed Trinity at 6:00, while BT's schedule also places the Titans at Pace for the tri-match. In MaxPreps' August 20 Georgia rankings, Blessed Trinity sat at No. 5 and Pope at No. 6.   What makes this matchup fun is how closely the strengths line up.   Both teams have experienced outsides. Both have middles capable of affecting a rally without receiving the ball. Both have defenders who can turn a hard swing into an immediate transition opportunity.   There may not be many comfortable rotations Tuesday night.   These are the six players I would watch to understand why.    Stella is still only a sophomore, but Blessed Trinity is already trusting her with significant offensive responsibility. The 6-foot-1 outside currently leads the Titans in kills per set after gaining extensive varsity experience as a freshman.   Her development makes this matchup particularly interesting. Pope has enough size and defensive discipline to make obvious attacking choices difficult. Stella's next level is learning to stay dangerous when power is not the easiest answer. High hands, changing speeds, attacking deep corners and creating a manageable swing from off the net are the tools that allow a young pin to keep scoring as the block improves.   Her intangible positive is confidence. Receiving this much responsibility this early forces an athlete to learn how to recover quickly. One blocked swing cannot become three tentative ones. Tuesday provides another opportunity to see how comfortable Stella is carrying that expectation. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Destinee gives Blessed Trinity something every offense wants: a middle the opponent cannot afford to forget.   At 6-foot-1, the senior has been one of BT's most efficient attackers and strongest blockers over multiple seasons. She led the Titans with 107 blocks last fall and has opened this season hitting at an extremely efficient rate.   Her matchup with Pope's middles could become one of the most technical parts of the night. Destinee's ability to transition quickly and remain available on first tempo can hold Pope's block in the center long enough to free the pins. Defensively, the challenge is equally demanding: read the setter, stay disciplined and close space without chasing.   Senior middles often provide another intangible advantage—patience. They understand that some rotations may produce several blocks or kills while others require them to keep working without touching the ball. That willingness to influence space without needing the statistic is a mark of maturity. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Abby has steadily developed from a freshman libero into one of Blessed Trinity's most important first-contact players.   The 5-foot-7 junior currently leads BT in digs per set and entered this season with more than 500 career varsity digs and nearly 900 serve-receive contacts.   Tuesday will challenge her ability to read before she moves. Pope has experienced attackers who can change speeds and attack different portions of the court, so guessing becomes dangerous. Abby's posture, platform discipline and relationship with the block will be important.   Her bigger influence may be communication. When the libero takes ownership of seams and short-ball responsibility, the entire passing unit becomes more decisive. Blessed Trinity has plenty of offensive firepower; Abby helps determine how often the Titans actually get to use all of it. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Lynden is the definition of an experienced varsity pin.   The 6-foot-1 senior has played varsity volleyball throughout high school and currently leads Pope in kills per set. She also competes at the club level with A5.   What makes Lynden dangerous is the opportunity to combine that physical profile with years of seeing increasingly sophisticated defenses. At this stage, the evaluation should not simply be whether she can hit hard. Watch how she handles a formed block. Does she see the hands? Does she stay aggressive out of system? Can she make a productive play when the set is not perfect?   Senior outside hitters also carry an emotional responsibility. Pope will already have played a match before facing BT. Fatigue, frustration and momentum become factors. A veteran pin who can stay composed and continue demanding the ball can help stabilize everyone around her. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Raegan's progression at middle has been one of Pope's more interesting early-season developments.   The 6-foot-1 junior currently leads the Greyhounds in hitting percentage and total blocks, after contributing 54 blocks as a sophomore.   Against BT, the skill to watch is her lateral discipline. Blessed Trinity can attack from several locations, and a middle who begins guessing will quickly find herself chasing. Raegan needs to read, close and then immediately create space to transition into offense.   That ability to work continuously is one of the position's biggest intangibles. Middles can go several rallies without receiving a set and still be asked to sprint every transition and press every block. Raegan's continued willingness to do that work is what allows her physical tools to influence more than just the balls she touches. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Wynnie has already spent multiple seasons developing into Pope's defensive anchor.   The junior libero currently leads the Greyhounds at 4.6 digs per set after recording 513 digs as a sophomore.   What makes Wynnie important in this matchup is the variety she will have to defend. Destinee can attack quickly through the middle. Stella can create from the pin. BT's setters can also use serving pressure to prevent Pope from ever reaching clean offense.   Wynnie's skill is not simply reaching difficult balls. It is turning defense into something usable. A spectacular dig that flies into the stands may extend the rally; a controlled dig to target gives Pope a chance to score.   The intangible to watch is command. Great liberos become the backcourt's traffic controller—calling seams, identifying tips and helping teammates reset after mistakes. In a match where runs could develop quickly, that presence can be enormous. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    The fun part of Blessed Trinity-Pope is that both teams can challenge every phase.   Pass poorly, and the middle disappears.   Lose discipline at the net, and the pins get favorable swings.   Defend without control, and the opponent simply gets another chance.   Stella English and Lynden Harvey can test the antennas. Destinee Chukelu and Raegan Marshman can fight for control of the center. Abby Woodward and Wynnie Abney can decide whether the spectacular attacks actually become points.   That is why Tuesday should be worth watching.   The biggest plays may happen at the end of rallies.   The players who control everything leading up to them may ultimately decide the match.
